I am a Wharton alum, and I would be happy to answer questions and help. Essay Analysis & Comments I have been approached by quite a few prospective candidates asking for advice on "what's best to write for Wharton", i.e. what would the school want to hear. My personal view, reinforced by what has worked for me is to decide on what parts of YOURSELF and YOUR story you want to showcase the most, i.e. what makes you unique and valuable, and deliver that using some creative writing. The question then becomes not that of execution, because good execution does not stand in the way. The only thing that matters is then whether YOU are indeed valuable and unique. What makes you valuable and unique? My personal agenda during school visit would've always been "schmooze till you drop" in all the buildings there are. Have a plan before you go: names, classes, visits, conversations, meetings, coffee, events after classes, etc. I have been reviewing alot of veteran candidate essays and I think the key to essays is to keep things simple, honest, and compelling. There is no magic formula and the more "consultants" tell us to sprinkle in examples here and there, the more of the human element you lose. I agree it is important to show the diversity of your experiences, but I believe is is most important to reveal the person you are, your core values, and how you interact with people, resolve conflict, improve, and work to help others. After being here for nearly 2 months, I can already tell how the admissions process reflects the learning team model. Of course they want great candidates, but they are evaluating your leadership charactertistics - how do you resolve conflict, handle intense emotional events? are you conscientious aka do you step up for your team and help to resolve interpersonal disputes? are you comfortable in a variety of roles from leading to filling a supporting role? how far will you go to help your team achieve their goals? do your goals spring from your personal story and values? have your past actions matched up with your goals? what kind of personal impact do you bring here. it is alot less about filling out a formula and a lot more about openness, integrity, and telling your compelling personal story rather than impressing the committee with accomplishments i firmly believe the class is not selected solely according to accomplishments, but by selecting the best people who will create the strongest community/environment with the best possible longevity aka alumni network i know the process sucks, and you guys/girls are stressed but after you craft your essays, take a second and look at how those essays reveal who you are, what makes you tick, focus on leadership but remember leadership has many components liek the ones i referred to - openness, conscientiousness, emotional reactivity, etc PM me if you need any help, I was in your shoes last year, i definitely didnt have the most impressive stats but used my experiences to create a brand around leadership and values and it paid off Application Submission Confirmation Text Last interview questions : https://poetsandquants.com/2010/11/21/l ... al-issues/

What are the awards that you are planning on using? For example, I was on the Dean's list, which I plan to include, but having a hard time thinking of others.

The "Awards" section for college/university: Did you just list them or did you list and explain them?

The "most significant college, university, community and professional awards, honors or scholarships you have received": did you re-list previously described awards? Im thinking I should just double-dip once, pick the "most significant" college honor, and then list that along with some post-college honors.

The TOEFL waiver: Im a born-and-raised English speaking American. Do I need to check that waiver box?

Finally, the "hobbies/interests" section: Its asking for club title, positions held, etc. First, is it going to be a huge hit to just leave this field blank? I dont have any hobbies or interests, beyond what Ive already placed elsewhere in the application, that I can really put into club/organization form.

I can't seem to find UCLA under the school lookup. I tried just 'California', 'UCLA', 'Los Angeles'. Nothing works. The only UC I can find is UC-San Diego, I can't even find Berkeley. Has anyone else had this problem?

Its definitely in there... I had similiar trouble on my app to a different school. Look to see if they shorten the word University to Univ. or something like that. It is DEF in there, you just got to find it...

I feel really stupid right now. I still cannot find it. I have tried searching using: California, Los Angeles, LA, L.A., UCLA, U.C.L.A.

I even tried searching for other UCs. I tried searching for UC Berkeley and it doesn't come up, nor does UC-Irvine. I even tried using just Berekely, and just Irvine to no avail. The only undergraduate UC institution I can find in the database is UC San Diego.

Has anyone from UCLA, Berkeley, or any other UC submitted a Wharton app?

Hi.. this may have been answered before but I haven't found an answer.
The application has a section "Awards" under the undergraduate degree section while there is a question "List the most significant college, university, community and professional awards, honors or scholarships you have received" under the Awards and Certifications section. Do you repeat the undergraduate awards for this section in addition to others received post-undergrad?

With regards to the resume, did other applicants include a cover letter? I am planning on just the one page resume (but can include the cover letter if necessary). I tried to find out if this was necessary/preferred/required, but didn't find any info on it.

Unlike Sloan, Wharton does not ask for a cover letter. I think the instructions given by Wharton are pretty detailed and nothing is mentioned regarding a cover letter. On the contrary, it asks to limit the CV to one page. I think it is safe to assume they do not want a cover letter.

Mine seemed ok, but I do remember reading the instructions saying to make sure your employment details, reason for leaving etc. are not chopped of in the pdf and if so, to try to make changes (by adding spaces or enters etc) in order for everything you wrote to be visible.

In the employment section of the online application, what are you guys putting in the 'duties' portion?

Is it ok to put in achievements and responsibilities or will that be frowned upon by AdCom?
The character limit is quite large to put only responsibilities and there are quite a few achievements that I'd like to mention but there is no space to address them in the resume/LORs/Essays.

Check out the Student to Student blog on Wharton's website regarding that. They mention that the job duties section should be limited to job duties only. The awards / achievements can be mentioned in the awards section under education or under General Information. Hope that helps.

Has anyone recently submitted their application? I just submitted mine but did not get a confirmation e-mail that my application was received. I didn't get a notification when my recommendations were submitted. Is that normal for Wharton? Can anyone help? Thanks guys!
