I have been a long time reader, but only recently began posting. I think it's tremendous how supportive this community is, and given the number of 6XX -> 7XX improvement stories I have seen (including my own), that support is yielding obvious dividends. However, I am looking for a very honest assessment here.
I took the GMAT in November and scored a 750 (Q47, V46), and obviously I was extremely proud and excited having vastly improved on the 650 I scored 5 years earlier. But now, I am beginning to consider whether I should retake the exam to improve my quant score.
I am applying in R2 to Wharton, Kellogg, and Booth, so there is not enough time to retake before admissions deadlines, nor am I terribly worried about the score for admissions purposes (maybe I should be?). But, looking ahead to recruiting, I have begun to wonder if a Q47 could be a hinderance in recruiting for investment banking or strategy consulting (BCG, Bain, McKinsey). Below are my scores on the GMATPrep tests:
- GMATPrep 1 - Attempt 1: 750 (Q47, V47)
- GMATPrep 1 - Attempt 2: 770 (Q49, V47) - No noticeable overlap/repeats
- GMAT Prep 2 - Attempt 1: 770 (Q49, V47)
I believe with a little additional prep work in quant (and hopefully less nerves given my 750 performance last attempt), I could improve to Q48 or Q49 without a drop in my verbal. Nothing in my prep work has led me to believe Q50-Q51 could be possible, so I could only hope for a 1 to 2 point improvement over my current score if I were to retake.
Possible mitigating factors:
- A's in quant heavy undergrad and graduate courses: from Finance to Non-Linear Optimization to Calculus II to numerous programming classes (C++, Oracle PL/SQL, Java, SQL)
- Reasonably high overall GPA in undergrad/grad concentrations in accounting
- Coming from top accounting / consulting firm (think green dot)
- Passed CPA exam and CFA Level I
Thoughts?
