Just some quick background, I currently work in the biotech/pharma industry (BS in Bio) but have developed an interest in finance/investments and thus will apply to MBA programs in the near future. In the mean time I was interested in taking some finance courses due to interest/gain some formal knowledge in the matter and help offset my uGPA. Thus, I initially stumbled upon courses at NYU SCPS which I was planning to take a few this upcoming fall however I recently saw the story regarding MIT/Harvard offering free online courses in the fall with certificates/grades (https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/03/educa ... .html?_r=1)

Since the online program is just starting this fall I understand there won't be much feedback on it but it does carry the MIT/Harvard name.

Curious what everyone's thoughts on between the two programs for my needs.
NYU or even Baruch would be the way to go, I think. Speaking from experience.

If EdX turns out to be like Coursera, a similiar initiative between Michigan, Penn, Princeton and Stanford, then the courses are not really fit (yet) to be used as an alternative transcript. Great stuff for personal development, but we're probably too early on the curve right now.

I was initially interested in courses for personal development however I think EdX has an advantage (not 100% sure on this) over Coursera in that you can receive an actual grade.

Anyone have any insight as to how these courses are viewed by both adcoms and in the professional world? Obviously, it isn't an actual online course, but is it viewed positively (i.e. showing a genuine interest in the subject)?

Given that these courses are just springing up the past year, I'd imagine they have little to no experience seeing them, so there's no real precedent to say whether it would be positive or negative. I think you'd be hard pressed to make a case that it's a net negative. The real question is whether it's better than spending your time on something else, and that is up to the discretion of the individual.
