Hi everyone. Best of luck to all those waiting for their invite invitations! :)

Need your two cents on something. They're having a hard time matching me to an alumni interviewer in my home country, so they're giving me a choice - either to fly to Singapore (3:30 flight) and interview with an alumni, or have a phone interview with a 'member of the admissions staff'. Which choice do you guys think is better? Flying out to SG might show my dedication to the school, but having my interview with someone from admissions would be less subjective (imo). Help please!!

Travel man! The alumni will be really nice to you if he knows about your trip and then when he asks about it you can say how you had the choice but since you've met and thoroughly enjoyed talking to a few people from Booth before, you thought it was totally worth it!!!

I don't think throwing money out the window for a flight would show any dedication. Beside, you can have an interview straight to the source with an Adcom instead of a watered down report from an alumni.

Either way, the Booth interview is super easy. Very conversational. They make an effort to make you at ease and not try to trick you with some BS questions. They truly just want you to answer why the MBA, why Booth and why now.

My understanding was that Booth is very concerned with fit. Who better to judge fit than a student or alumni?

An Adcom that has been there for years, that has seen dozens of classes come and go, and that knows exactly who and what they are looking for?

Also don't forget that fit depends a lot on the person you get. The MBA experience can be very different, some are more career focus, some more fun focus, etc. You might not get an alumni that you definitely relate with.

Either way I believe both options are appropriate, I just don't believe he should be rushed into paying additional out of pocket expenses for this when the other option seems to be equally appropriate.

I don't think it matters too much TBH. The interviewer fills out the same form, which is reviewed by the adcoms with the app. Given how many interviews they do I doubt the adcom would remember you.

Yes and I would add that OP should do whatever makes him more comfortable. Either be in the comfort of your house but without the benefit of reading body language, or in person but with the added stress of travelling 4 hours. That seems to me to be much more important than whatever "advantage" one option might have over the other. Give yourself the optimal environment with whoever comes you way.

I am keeping one tab open to the application site as they posted updates there yesterday prior to sending out the e-mails.

Good morning from NYC. Best of luck to everyone! I guess our paths will likely cross next Friday on Wharton's forum!

wow your academics stats looks impressive. waiting for an invite or already got one?

Thanks, I got an invite. Not sure why it isn't showing up on my profile thing on the left.
I think when you get an invite, your status removes the (A) and changes the font color of the school name to some sort of purple(?) to denote invited to interview

Just a fun question as we wait...would you rather be denied without interview, or denied after interview....

I choose the former.

Definitely the former, the latter is just rough.

Thanks everyone for the inputs! All have good points, but I'm leaning towards flying out. I will sit on it some more.

Wish I could just suggest an alumni interviewer instead, one of our clients is an alum :P

I choose the former.

I would choose after interview as I feel like any extra interview experience can only help me further craft my story for the next interview.

Being denied sucks, but if you get an interview, you can at least feel confident that you were in their top X%.

I am in that boat as I was recently denied after a contentious interview for CBS (interviewed with a finance guy who likened marketers to used car salesmen). It's very deflating to say the least but there is a silver lining in knowing that you had the profile that the school would have accepted. Sometimes interviews just don't work out and can't do anything about that but try to learn and be better prepared for the next one.

That being said, I'd much rather have the opportunity to interview and then be denied then not be able to share my story at all.

My advice: travel! I think that the "member of the admissions staff" is an "admissions associate" (i.e., a 2-year current student who helps the admissions office by conducting on-campus interviews), not an "admissions officer". I assume that because you will generally be interviewed either by current students or by alumni, not by admissions officers.

So I think that you should interview with the alumni and show your excitement. Also, I think you can show more "you" if you interview in person, and therefore it is of your best interest to be interviewed by an alumnus in person.

All the best!
