Hey guys,
I gave my TOEFL on 10th Jan 2015 and got my scores on 22nd Jan. I'm really happy with my score - 117(R-30, W-30, S-29, L-28).
I know that after appearing for the GMAT, one gets so exhausted that the whole idea of pushing oneself to prepare for another 170$ test can be a test in itself.
Nevertheless, I hope my experience acts as a catalyst in your TOEFL preparations.
SCHEDULING THE EXAM
So, after contemplating too long on deciding a date (since the 16th Jan slots were available in another city, only 24th Jan slots were available in my city), I routinely opened up TOEFL iBT website on 7th Jan to schedule my exam on 16th Jan, 200 km away from my city. To my surprise, i saw a slot for 10th Jan in my city. I wanted my scores early, so I went right ahead and scheduled the exam with a late fee. Trust me, after GMAT, paying the TOEFL fee is the ONLY thing that will make you sit and study.
PREPARATION
1. Came across this super handy debrief on gmatclub itself - https://gmatclub.com/forum/toefl-100-prepared-for-2-days-147099.html. I referred most of the links mentioned here for test prep
2. I knew I would not need much practice with Reading and Writing section. Thus I decided to concentrate on Speaking and Listening. However, I did download the TOEFL official guide CD which has access to 4 free tests. Obviously, you can get scores for Reading and Listening sections only, but still I recommend practicing a test each day if you have just 4 days for the exam.
a. SPEAKING - NOTEFULL!!! Please begin your Speaking preparation by watching just the 4-5 basic NOTEFULL TOEFL mastery videos - One for each question. The videos are freely available on Youtube and their website https://www.notefull.com/. I started by making notes on the structure of the answers for each question. This structure should be your skeleton for TOEFL prep. Once you have the structure with you, practice questions from https://www.eng1on1.com/ibt.php?test=6. To practice, download TOEFL Speaking Recorder [TSR] app on your phone. It is freely available on Google Playstore. Amazing app!
Just follow the above and you will be all set to ace the speaking section.
b. LISTENING - Just practice questions from https://www.english-test.net/toefl/listening/How_do_botanists_define_a_seed.html. The key to this section is concentration and well written notes.
c. WRITING - Again, refer NOTEFULL video for Question 1 on writing. That will give you the structure of your response. The key for a 30 in Writing section is to you use your vocabulary and writing speed to the maximum. Both my essays were 500 words+ and I did get a full 30.
d. READING - Well, if you have prepared for GMAT RC, this is going to be cakewalk. Apart from the inference question, no other question requires preparation. Just solve a practice comprehension and you will understand that this section requires very basic Reading skills.
Based on your strengths/weaknesses, draft a plan and start your prep. I really dont think that a preparation time of more than a week at most is required for a decent score on the TOEFL. Just be confident and learn to practice in an environment that disturbs you a lot. For the speaking section, speak loud and clear in the mic.
