The new Xerox machine does more than simply copying documents; it can resize, lighten, and collate.

(A) The new Xerox machine does more than simply copying
(B) The new Xerox machine’s functions are more than a simple copying of
(C) The new Xerox machine has done more than a simple copying of
(D) The new Xerox machine’s functions have done more than copy simply
(E) The new Xerox machine does more than simply copy

Source: Manhattan Review

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

This is a question of parallel structure. It can resize documents, lighten documents, collate documents and copy (or copying) documents. The form copy needs to be used, because this form is consistent with the rest of the sentence. That eliminates choices A, B and C. Choice D is incorrect as it changes the subject of the sentence to the functions of the machine, rather than the machine itself. The word ‘simply’ is in the wrong place in the sentence. The tense is also incorrect. Choice E is the correct answer

Hi, thanks for the explanation. While I took E as my answer choice, I'm still not clear why 'copy' has to be parralel with 'resize', ' colate' and the rest, aren't they in a different independent clause all together? Please experts help me out here daagh @egmat...thanks in anticipation.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. While I took E as my answer choice, I'm still not clear why 'copy' has to be parallel with 'resize,' ' collate' and the rest, aren't they in a different independent clause all together? Please, experts, help me out here [email protected] in anticipation.

1. True; they might be in a different clause. Still, they are in a related clause, and that is why the semicolon is there rather than a period. After all, those functions mentioned in the second IC are also the functions of if the same machine cited in the first IC>
Therefore, some semblance of parallelism is certainly required between them.
2. Please note the use of the word simply copying is grammatically incorrect, since an adverb such as 'simply' cannot modify a gerund 'copying.'
3. This example is styled after an earlier but similar (probably an official one) question, which runs as follows.

Quote:
Degler does more than merely summarizing existing research; he constructs a coherent picture of two centuries of studies dealing with the changing roles of women.

(A) Degler does more than merely summarizing

(B) Degler’s study is more than a mere summarizing of

(C) Degler has done more than a mere summarizing of

(D) Degler’s study has done more than summarize merely

(E) Degler does more than merely summarize

The answer to this question is also E.
