A week to go to my GMAT and while analyzing my SC mistakes I realized these 5 mistakes I made. Hopefully this will help you too.
1. Possessive nouns can take possessive pronoun. Do not eliminate any option just because it has a possessive noun.
2. Use past perfect ONLY if there is another simple past verb in the sentence.
3. Use such as to introduce examples and like as to compare.
4. Options having "being" are virtually always wordy and incorrect.
5. "If" is used only to introduce conditional clause, otherwise use "whether".

I agree with your points, but I would like to further polish three of them..
2. Use past perfect ONLY if there is another simple past verb in the sentence. - Past perfect is used when listing two different timelines, if both things occur at the same time, a past perfect isn't required
3. Use such as to introduce examples and like as to compare. - Use "like" to compare nouns, and "as" to compare verbs
5. "If" is used only to introduce conditional clause, otherwise use "whether". - "If" is used to state a conditional clause, and "whether" is used when you are given two choices, amongst which you must select one.
