I'll try to help you out.
The difference is MEANING based and that too very subtle.
Let's 1st understand the meaning of the original statement. -
"Despite its capture of the city of Washington during the War of 1812, the overall military aims of Great Britain were not achieved during the conflict."
basically, overall military aims of Great Britain were not achieved during the conflict.
now concentrate on the bold part.
option C states - "Great Britain did not achieve its overall military aims in the conflict."
Which is exactly what the original statement wants to convey. IT's refers back to britan.
Whereas, in D
"Great Britain did not achieve the overall military aims in the conflict."
The absence of IT changes the meaning. HOW ?
Now it is not clear who's military aims did the brits not achieve. Were they the war's aims? washington's? who knows? maybe the queen does...but for now let's just say no one knows and for that reason we can't go with D.
