in OA, had served is WRONG. THIS mistake is repeated many times.

had done never happens in a past time, period, it used to show preceding.

Thang, I think you might be confused. Had is used to in reference to the first of two things in the past, and is thus used correctly in E.

He served as president, then he was elected. The had is referring to serving as president so it's used perfectly here.

You might want to revise your understanding of the rule.

I know 1 thing about the past perfect structure and that make sense to all of easy gmat questions
when we have a past perfect the other verb must be in simple past and the the order must be chronological.
