Hi iliavko. You understand what the question states but I guess focus more on what exactly is being asked. The question asks for the ratio B/M+B as Total Votes = Mystery (M) + Biography (B). Hope that helps....

Okay so lets take the number of people who like biography as x

The statement states the people who like mystery novel are 3 times so it will be 3x

Now finding the ration x/x+3x Hence 1:4 So C

Hi, Mike! Sorry to bother but I guess I could use your explanation skills on this one...

This is a very good example of what I just can't understand about ratios.

They say that there are 3x votes for M than for B. So if we have 1 vote for B we will have 3 votes for M. So (according to my understanding) the ratio is 1: 3. But how come that the answer is 1 : 4 ??? Omg I'm so confused with this concept...

Or should the answers say 1/4 and not 1 : 4 because it is not the same thing?..

For me 1 to 4; 1 : 4 means that together there are 5 parts and to represent one of these five parts I would write 1/5 but not 1:5.

Do I make my doubt clear?..

PS: I am answering the wrong question? The question says what is the ratio of M to the TOTAL votes. It this my mistake?..
I'd really appreciate some help here!..

1:4 and 1/4 are the same thing.

To answer your question - 3x for M, so 1x for B
(a) Ratio of B to M -> 1:3 [1x/3x]
(b) Ratio of B to Total -> 1:4 [1x/4x ; since Total = 3x+1x = 4x]

We are asked (b) in the given question.

Hope this helps
