J-Term after FT Rejection

Question

Hello - I was recently rejected from the FT program (with no interview) at CBS and was wondering about reapplying to the J-term.

Is it common for people to reapply and get into the J-term?

Holding all else equal, will I be at a disadvantage when I apply to the J-term program as I did not receive admission into the regular full-time program?

If I apply to the J-term program and do not receive admission, will I be at disadvantage if I choose to reapply for next year’s full-time program?

Any light on the top would be greatly appreciated.

I was in Jterm and I am an admissions consultant with lots of clients who have been admitted to CBS. CBS likes reapplicants, so reapplying is not a problem.

1) Do you have an idea why you didn't get in this year? Figuring this out and addressing it is key, but I imagine you're working on that already.

2)Can you adapt your story/goals to the jterm program? If you can do this successfully, they will give you another look. The main challenge will be identifying the weaknesses in your profile - if you can provide more info, happy to give you my thoughts on this.

With Columbia, yes it is very possible to apply successfully to January-term after a rejection from the regular pool or ED pool of the full-time program. We at MBA Admit.com get clients this time of year who applied on their own to Columbia and were rejected. They may have learned of their rejections sometime between December and February, and they want to know whether they could have a different outcome if they apply with a much stronger application to January-term. Bear in mind that they would be submitting the new application ideally around end-June, about one month after the new application is released (it is often released in early June). They would likely hear the outcome of the new application by the end of July. Can you imagine, getting an acceptance from Columbia just months after receiving a rejection – and to the very same graduating class, just starting later! We have helped countless candidates achieve this outcome. Usually they did something very wrong in their first applications – essays that were off-the-mark, a flat recommendation, failure to distinguish themselves from the pool, etc. The key is to identify and correct the problem(s) and then resubmit an outstanding application that shows the admission committee how hard you worked to put a better application together. If you look at our reviews, you will see several candidates who talk about getting into Columbia on the second try and several of those are January-term folk. One of our candidates had been rejected when applying on his own in March and resubmitted with our assistance at the end of June for January-term. Columbia actually had a representative giving an informational talk near his city and so they asked him to come to that, saying that they had further questions about his application. It was actually a trick: he showed up and they asked him to identify himself in the audience. When he stood up, they told him, "You're In!" in front of the whole audience. You know he was over the moon! When we work with a candidate, we are very honest about whether we think you can correct whatever the weakness is in order to be successful in January term. You will have an honest assessment to guide your choices. By the way, January-term is the easiest entry point to the Columbia full-time program since it is under less demand. The second-easiest entry point is Early Decision. When a candidate either wants to start business school soon or when they have a notable flaw that might keep them from getting an admission in the Early Decision or regular pools, January-start is a good option to consider.
