Pushing off MBA application for a year to work for a "feeder" company?

Question

So, as you can see from my profile on the left, I have had a disastrous application season. Now, I am wondering if it would be better to a) Stay at my current workplace for another year which would entail a promotion and apply in 2017 for matriculation in 2018? b) Switch to a feeder firm and apply right away (with about 2-3 months at the new firm). c) Switch to a feeder firm and apply in 2017? To give some context, I am a brown guy working in the tech sector (Yes, one of the worst pools to be in

). I work at a fairly large company (think PayPal, eBay, Linkedin), have been at the job for about 3 years now, expecting a promotion this year. I am 26 this year, so was wondering if putting off my application by another year would make me too old (28) for the M-7. On the other hand, if I do get to work for a feeder firm like Apple, Google, Microsoft, I might have a better chance at the M-7. On a similar note, what are the feeder firms in tech industry? From what I see on the internet, it is Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Fb (in that order). Is that accurate? I appreciate any advice on the above. Personally I would advise against switching companies and applying right away with only 2-3 months of experience. Your new direct supervisor won't be able to provide a credible recommendation, and without that, there's nothing you've really proven by making the switch to a feeder company. If anything, you'll be competing against others from that company who have been there longer.

I think the type of firm you are currently working at, are certainly strong enough to net you an admit. You applied to the top schools in the US so even with a good profile you cans till get dinged as you did. Now the cluster of companies you are considering are certainly more reputed so if this is an opportunity to grow and develop then it would be deemed an improvement in your work experience if you are able to make an impact and secure positive reccs. So applying immediately would be a no since you could not guarantee the above but I would consider the switch. It would be even better if you can get promoted then switch. You are not too old so don't let that influence you decision. The additionally separation between your apps will also help give you a bit of a fresh start. Good luck!

Is there any harm in re-applying in 2016 and if its a reject, re-applying in 2017? That would be 3 consecutive applications. What do you think?

What I would say is that every unsuccessful application you submit to a program puts more of an onus on new and improved additions to your subsequent application. Remember every one of these types of app will have a re-applicant essay asking you what has changed so it is important that there is a material change from your prior app

Go for the feeder firm if you can make it. And if it's better for you to apply earlier, have no problems with doing so. Feeder firms are called feeder firms for a reason. And coming from one will have a large positive effect upon your application. Since you haven't done so well in the past applications, I would also recommend: a) getting someone to read through your previous applications and analyze what went wrong b) hedging your bets a bit, by opening up your target school list. I agree with your assessments.
How would you rate Tesla and Uber from an adcom's perspective? Are they considered feeder firms? If I were to receive an offer from, say Amazon or Apple and an equally good offer from say Tesla, what would you recommend I do? All hypothetical of course!

Honestly all great firms that will look really impressive on your resume. Apple and Amazon are moreso considered feeder firms in comparison to the others you mentioned given they have been around a bit longer but they will all look good. At this point it would be really be about the role and the leadership exp and impact you could drive
