Thank you! I actually spoke to the assistant dean of admissions at one of the schools, and she recommended I go forward with my current scores, but I think since there is no risk in taking it again, I'm going to do so in a couple weeks. I looked back at my practice tests, and on all six of them, I never scored below a 32, even reaching upper 30s occasionally. So, I think my 28 was more of a fluke. With a couple extra study weeks and a fresh set of problems, I think I'll be able to boost my score quite a bit.

And I was going to ask the same question when the time is right about whether or not to make use of the optional question - I want to explain, but also don't want to feel like I'm making excuses. I'm sure I'll be reaching out for more guidance in coming days.

Thanks again to both of you - I appreciate the feedback!

That's great to have that reassurance about your current score but I think retaking is still the right call especially if you were scoring higher.

Yes, definitely write the optional essay...keep it short and don't make excuses but it's better to admit you know it's low and offer an explanation then to have the adcom make assumptions about what happened. Check out this post on our blog: https://www.mbamission.com/blog/2016/03 ... ibility-3/

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for the input. After two weeks and a lot of studying, I took the GMAT again and improved my score 100 points! I now have a 690, with a 34 quant and 51 verbal! I am thrilled and so much more confident about being admitted to the programs I want. So thank you so much for encouraging me to give it another try!
