Hello, hoping to get some honest feedback as I'm a Singaporean and expect for competition to be strong, currently applying.

Background
- 27-8 y/o F, Singaporean Chinese
- English (Native), Chinese (Mother Tongue), German (O-Level, but now basic)
- 4+ YoE by end of 2023
-> First 2 years in strat consulting (one of the Big 4s) doing deals advisory work. >10 projects across industries and APAC markets
-> Next 2 years (most recent) in the Strategy and Operations team at a Series C/D start-up in SEA, working closely with leadership across markets and functions. Was promoted once and currently a Manager. Likely to be promoted by start of next year to a CoS role equivalent. Consecutive exceed expectations

1. Academics
- GPA: Second upper from local (NUS/SMU/NTU) Business School with a double degree in Economics + university scholars programme
- GMAT: 740
- CFA Level 1
- Top high school

2. International motivation
- Work experience thus far have been very regional / APAC-focused. I work with people outside of Singapore on a day-to-day basis. in my previous workplace, though it was SG-based team, I was one of the 5 Singaporeans out of 30 ppl in the team with others coming from UK, Netherlands, France, and rest of SEA.
- In university, been on multiple study trips (Iran, Kazakhstan, amongst many others) and overseas internships (Israel for 6 months)
- Have been to more than 25 countries thus far; recently came back from 3-week Europe Honeymoon backpacking; planning a trip to LATAM end of the year
- In general, I've always been extremely keen to work and interact with different cultures as I think that broadens my perspectives and mind - this is especially important in an increasingly global and borderless work environment
- (Not a high priority point I want to highlight) But there's a possibility that my husband is getting seconded to another market in Asia (Australia/Thailand/Indonesia) the year after, and I hope to find a job and follow him there post-MBA

3. Leadership skills
- Works closely with leadership; promoted and considered with future leadership role within co. - I think this is the strongest point
- (Won't mention in apps as outdated) Was an exco member in co-curriculars throughout school (e.g. High-school - Sectional Leaders, Class Rep, etc; University consulting projects - Team Leader)

4. Ability to contribute
- My wide diversity across start-ups + corporates, as well as work with Asian colleagues allows me to bring more perspectives and add value to discussions in the classroom
- Actively involved in volunteering and mentorship which shows my willingness in giving back to the program - always been a passion of mine to help those younger than me - e.g. was Project Advisor to undergrads, volunteer mentor and advisor to elementary and middle school students in separate programs, currently enrolling myself in another mentorship program for high school students)

5. Post-MBA goals
- Short-term: Get into one of the MBBs - being in my current role and working so closely with leadership makes me realise a biz acumen + soft leadership gap; also because in a small co. there are fewer best practices to learn from; want to go back consulting to work with established co.s and hone these aspects + build more biz confidence. Out of MBBs, esp Bain, given I know many ex-Bainies and am impressed by their commitment to investing in its people
- Long-term: Own P&L in APAC region in a more mature health-tech / ed-tech / fintech global company, which mission is to bring services to the underserved (whether not having access of proper healthcare, formal education, or are currently underbanked)

6. Other Co-Curriculars
- Road cycling - completed 200km Audax last year; took a break and gunning for 300km this year
- Volunteering as above throughout my school days till now
- (Won't mention in apps as outdated) Intending to pick up Golf this year + used to play and be involved in various performing arts playing 3 instruments in elementary to middle school

7. Strengths and Weaknesses
- #1 - Set high goals and willing to work hard towards them; conversely led to burn out and now learnt how to self-manage
- #2 - High people-oriented in work-settings; conversely can sometimes shoulder burden of other workload and now learnt to be more aservative and set boundaries

LORs - current and former supervisors - both did MBAs or MBA equivalents

Concerns / Questions:
- Do I need to refine my post-MBA goals?
- I feel my essays are not written with much "flair" and struggle to bring out a "Personal Brand" which makes me feel my application is bland - is this a real concern?
- Also, as I hold a "Strat" function, many of my achievements cannot really be quantified - how do I better illustrate the impact I create / deliver?

Would love any feedback wrt strength of profile and how to stand out more in the essays.

Hey MBAprep123456,

You definitely have a strong academic background from NUS/SMU/NTU and work experience too. These are both important factors in MBA admissions. Based on my understanding, I suggest focusing on highlighting your work experience, leadership skills, and extracurricular activities to create a well-rounded profile for MBA applications.

In terms of work experience, it is crucial to quantify your impact by showcasing examples of how you have improved efficiency, reduced costs, or increased revenue. Even if you need to fabricate certain numbers, it is essential to back them up with convincing evidence to make your achievements stand out. Highlight your experience working with international clients and teams, and if possible, showcase your association with the big fours.

As for leadership, it is not enough to mention that you have held leadership roles. You need to provide details about the number of people you have led, how you have led them, and the outcomes you achieved through your leadership.

Your extracurricular activities should not be treated as a secondary aspect of your profile. Instead, use them to showcase your interests, passions, and personal development. You can highlight your involvement with NGOs, family businesses, or any other relevant organisations, and how they have contributed to your growth.

While your GMAT score of 740 is impressive, it is not the only criterion for MBA admissions. You need to showcase a well-rounded profile with a consistent narrative, which can be achieved by showcasing your achievements and interests in a compelling manner.

In conclusion, I suggest working on creating a compelling and consistent profile by quantifying your impact, highlighting your leadership skills, and showcasing your extracurricular activities. By doing so, you can increase your chances of getting accepted into some of the top MBA programs.

With your profile, you could be a competitive candidate for many top MBA programs, such as Tuck, NYU Stern, and UCLA.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to set up a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

You will be a good candidate for INSEAD. The key is to string together a narrative that gets you from your first jobs to your current one as a entrepreneur. You have a lot of material, so having a cohesive, cogent and convincing storyline is everything.

If you are the successor to your family business, you should make that your stated career goal. I suppose you could always just not mention it (in favor of another career goal) but it's the type of thing that could be very interesting and help separate you from the applicant pool. It's important to consider (and write about) how an INSEAD MBA would help you run and/or change that business.

FYI, that your recommenders are HBS grads doesn't really matter. It's more important that they are people you trust and people who know you well. Their pedigree is not a consideration for your admission.

If we can be of help, please sign up for a free consultation to learn more about our services and how we can help optimize your chances at INSEAD (and elsewhere):

Hey MBAprep123456,

Thanks for sharing a detailed profile.

Congratulations on a stellar 740. Your other academic accolades go hand in hand with your score. On the work front, I can see a lot of good elements that can help you build great stories. 4 years of experience seems decent enough. INSEAD highly values international exposure, which will act as a plus point for you. Your leadership skills are highly impressive and are evident because of your ability to mentor people. However, any specific instance you could highlight where you went beyond your call of duty and stood out amid your peers. You should demonstrate the roles and projects that you have undertaken and the respective impact to the organization's growth and progress.

INSEAD evaluates your potential based of the following criteria:
1. Ability to contribute
2. Leadership skills
3. International motivation
4. Academics

I see a mix of all these in your profile.

To answer your question, your post-MBA goals seem properly aligned and divided into short and long term. Specifically highlight your long term goal involving social causes. It will make your application stand out and give a major boost to your profile.
Since you are targeting INSEAD, you may want to read our article on How to get into INSEAD, to gain some insights of the school.

Adcoms should have the sense that the candidate possesses the necessary qualities and values and is qualified for an MBA at their school. Since the profile is evaluated on a set of factors, the qualitative aspect will be crucial. Your essays should discuss some significant events in your life that influenced you in a good way. All in all, your profile is amazing and do have a shot at INSEAD and other targeted schools. Overall I believe you are a total package, and you definitely have demonstrated your potential. You still need to convey the proper narrative (and here is where even the best candidates fall short). So, keep in mind that your 'Branding for MBA' is crucial, and do not take it lightly. —Branding is how you present your profile to business schools. It is critical in making a convincing case to AdComs. It is the pre-work that we do with all our applicants. What's going to matter most about your application is how you link experiential dots and make a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to get on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the business schools. Feel free to schedule a FREE PROFILE EVALUATION call with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

INSEAD could be an option. You have good scores/pedigree.

I am not seeing the "wow" factor in general for your profile, especially since you are coming from a competitive demographic. Is the startup you founded (but exited) a big deal or something you can advertise as one? If not, I think you need to think about schools beyond the Top 15 to be safe. You can apply to a few in the Top 15 but if your goal is to get a good MBA, you need to smart about to where and how many places you apply.

I would also look at US schools like Cornell (Johnson), Georgetown (McDonough), UT Austin (McCombs), Carnegie Mellon (Tepper), and UCLA (Anderson). These all have good tech/PM/entrepreneurship programs that would fit your interests.

Hope that helps,
Admissionado

mbaaspirant hope this finds you well

Although your academic arc is impressive, your GMAT score has room for improvement given the competitive demographic you belong to. As a relatively young applicant from a competitive background applying to the INSEAD program, it would be beneficial to aim for a stellar GMAT score, particularly if you plan to apply in the later rounds.

However, the good news is that Samsung is a strong feeder and recruiter brand at INSEAD. With a well-crafted strategy that demonstrates global immersion with this company, a steep career progression with future potential, and solid goals, you could become a strong contender for the INSEAD MBA.

When pitching your research experience for the MBA, it is essential to be strategic. While research profiles are unique and valuable, it is crucial to demonstrate functional responsibility in relevant projects leading to stakeholder management/engagement. You need to showcase your experiences and stories in a way that highlights your hands-on experience, and ability to engage with industry leaders, and contextualize business problems.

Your extracurricular activities are also impressive, particularly your startup fundraising story. Try to extract meaningful insights from it and add another layer of interest to your INSEAD application.

Lastly, my advice would be not to rush into the INSEAD application with your current GMAT score. If you are serious about the school, consider improving your score to enhance your profile and become a stronger candidate. INSEAD is not necessarily known to be reapplicant-friendly unless significant profile improvements are demonstrated.

INSEAD is known to be a consulting school, but more so because of the sheer number of consultants that join the program and return to MBBs after. But INSEAD feeds into almost every industry present, so you need not worry.

Best wishes

@mbaaspirant007 - given INSEAD has a % cap per nationality generally Indian INSEAD admits have a pretty high GMAT. You never know, but I think it's a bit unlikely; score a bit low, years of WE a bit low. You have a few interesting things - are there hard results to point to? Quantifiable achievements at work or in ECs? I agree with the school choices mentioned by Admissionado mostly (you want to focus on schools with a GMAT average of about 700) Have you tried the GRE? For reach schools would recommend Kellogg MBAi - helped an Indian with Singapore work experience get into Wharton Lauder with a 720 but super reach ofc.

Hi! It would be great if you could evaluate my profile and suggest a good GMAT score based on it for a possible scholarship.

I am:
F, 28, applying for class of 2025
Nepalese
Not taken GMAT yet. Target > 700
I speak 5 languages and can read and write in 4 of them. German being one of them.

Work Experience:
1.5 years at a Chinese E-com giant’s subsidiary in Nepal. Started out as a Digital Marketing Associate and was soon handling category marketing for 2 categories which was 70-80% revenue for the company. I was promoted twice in that short period of time.I also helped the company transition through a buy-out from the marketing POV.

2 years ( by the time I apply) at one of the better Oppo brands (in India) - first as a Management Trainee in the online sales dept. and then in the branding team as a Senior Specialist. I have helmed big budget campaigns and won many awards externally and internally.

Education

Highschool with 73% taking biology and physics
Studied Business ( 7.0 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Undergraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university
Studied MBA (8.5 GPA) on Ministry of External Affairs, India full scholarship for Postgraduate Program at a 2nd tier state university

Extra-curricular

Started a club in highschool focused on social causes and engagement of students in social awareness for issues like safety and growth of children of prison inmates, environment, etc. Interviewed activists and published articles in the school magazine.

Organised football tournaments during college as a foreign student. I studied and lived with students from close to 55 countries at the time. I was also actively involved in integration of new admissions into the student life in the city.

I wrote and published papers in national journals during my MBA. I also helped faculties write business case studies.
I won a case study championship to land my first post-MBA job.

All scholarships I won were on a national level. Despite the pedigree not being refined, I competed on a national level to land those. Since they were government given scholarships, students are sent to state universities.

I have always been an avid reader and started a book club in my first job. Anywhere from managers to associates participated in it.

Why a second MBA?

I want to transition from marketing great products to building those products. Product strategy is an area that I am increasingly interested in and an MBA that focuses on strategy will add immense value in terms of theoretical knowledge, exposure and network.

I am also aware of the value my existing MBA has in the market and I want to go beyond that to reflect what I am capable of. I feel restricted in my current roles. A global MBA with a scope of great networking should open doors for me that were not even visible some time ago.

Hi suyathis1 hope this finds you well

You have an impressive profile with several strong points that are worth highlighting. Your out-of-country education, solid academic record, and international work experience are all notable achievements. However, your experience is on the lower side for an INSEAD MBA. Maybe give yourself another year or two to further enhance your profile.

Much scope for storytelling as well. Your promotion twice within 1.5 years of working at the Chinese e-commerce company's subsidiary in Nepal shows that you are a high performer. Your ability to help the company transition through a buy-out from a marketing perspective demonstrates your adaptability and resourcefulness. In addition, your success in leading big-budget campaigns and winning internal and external awards highlights your ability to deliver tangible results in marketing.

Your ECs seem dated. Reflect profoundly on how you are continuing to be a "force for good" (which is INSEAD's call for action and motto :) )

I would also like you to delve deeper into your motivation for pursuing a second MBA with a focus on product strategy at INSEAD. It is essential to tell the school why you see this INSEAD MBA as a necessary step in your career path, given your prior MBA and significant experience in product companies. Additionally, if I were your evaluator, I would like to see more emphasis on your international focus in your application, as INSEAD is a globally focused-business school.

Overall, I suggest taking time to reflect on these points and presenting a cohesive and well-thought-out narrative in your application.
Additionally, striving for a high GMAT score would enhance your standing among applicants from your country, which is a notably small pool at INSEAD. By effectively executing your application, you can significantly improve your chances of being accepted.

Best wishes

Q: Should I pin my hopes on interview invites?

A: In general, you should always assume no. Embrace the "expect the worst, hope for the best" mentality. Based on your profile, I'm not really sure you will be a strong candidate. I am not seeing the level of accomplishments or standout statistics to warrant admission. Still, I haven't seen your essays or letters of recommendation, so that could tip the scales in your favor.

Q: please let me know how should I proceed?

A: There's no much you can do. If you want to engage in interview preparation (just in case) you should send us a note or sign up for a free consultation (link below.) Otherwise, sit tight on INSEAD. Apply to other programs in the interim (assuming you haven't done so already) so you are appropriately managing the risk here.

It is difficult to assess the likelihood of receiving an invitation from INSEAD without evaluating your essays and overall application. Given that you are a relatively young candidate for INSEAD, it may have been beneficial to demonstrate stronger motivation by attempting to improve your GMAT score. Your GMAT score is below the average for your demographic at INSEAD.

However, your professional experience appears to be impressive and unconventional. Your success will largely depend on how effectively you have substantiated your accomplishments, as well as your experiences with entrepreneurial ventures and early-stage startups, in your letters of recommendation and essays.

If you want to get some feedback on your INSEAD essays you may reach out so you could plan your next steps accordingly.

Honestly, I would advocate for a 2 year MBA program given your entrepreneurial streak. A longer program would give you more opportunities and flexibility to explore the curriculum and the entrepreneurial ECAs. Writing entrepreneurship as a career goal may still not work, especially as MBAs are costly and it may make practical sense to start a venture while paying for the MBA fee/loan. That said, you will still get outstanding exposure which will benefit if you want to start a venture a few years after MBA.

However, get that GMAT score up by a good 30-40 points.

Hey comefirstly,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

It is difficult to determine the probability of receiving an interview invite. It depends on a lot of factors including your essays and how you have built a narrative around your profile. Your major work experience revolves around a startup, so it is equally important as how you have presented it to the AdComs. Your GMAT score doesn’t make your profile stand out and is also a point of concern.

INSEAD evaluates your potential based of the following criteria:
1. Ability to contribute
2. Leadership skills
3. International motivation
4. Academics

At this point, I don’t see a balance between these values in your profile. We might not be able to predict your interview invite, however we suggest that you start preparing for the interview, since getting into a top B-school is your end goal, sooner or later, right? It’ll definitely help you in your future journey of an MBA admission. In case you want to discuss your profile in detail and get a better understanding and clarity on things, feel free to hop on a call with us sometime this week. Hence, feel free to schedule a call with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi Everyone,

I have only recently decided I would definitely like to pursue my MBA, and I would appreciate any feedback on my profile. From what I have read, I think my profile could be pretty interesting since it is non-traditional, but I definitely lack extra-professional activities. I have hobbies which I list below, but I am not a member of any clubs or organizations. I have also not yet taken the GMAT or even any practice exams to estimate my performance, which I know will be an important factor. I have just ordered some study materials to begin my preparation.

Please let me know how my profile currently looks and offer any advice on how I might polish it up. I will probably not be applying for 2 years so that I can get my German citizenship, nail the GMAT, and save up at least a portion of the tuition fees.

Basics:
Male, 32, US citizen, nearly 10-year resident of Germany with permanent residency and intentions of dual citizenship (pending proposed change of German law),

Work Experience:
Approaching 5 years as a product development engineer (promoted to senior engineer last year) with an orthopeadic device company

Serve as project manager for multi-year development projects with teams including representatives from 10 different functional groups, but within a Weak Matrix structure. Other details can be provided or found under my LinkedIn profile (in/nicholausmeyers/)

Currently leading multifunctional team to improve internal processes for design verification (testing) activities and as team lead serving as part of a larger group largely consisting of managers and directors (I am the lowest level employee on this team) to make guiding decisions regarding the future of our overall design control procedures.

Also currently driving an effort to have a quality engineering team established in our German office (all QEs currently working from the US) in order to increase our local project efficiency. The proposal is currently being reviewed at the director level.

Recognized as a technical expert often consulting on the projects of other engineers, including those in higher technical roles, and all yearly reviews have been evaluated as „exceeds expectations“

Education:
Drexel University - accelerated BS/MS Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, Pennoni Honors College graduate with distinguished honors, overall GPA 3.6 (3.8 for all MS coursework)

Studied abroad for 1 semester at the University of Sheffield

Universität Ulm - PhD Human Biology, summa cum laude, 8 total publications

Awards:
Fulbright Research Fellow
Member of Pi Tau Sigma (International Honor Society for Mechanical Engineers)

Language Skills:
fluent in English and German, strong but not fluent in Italian, formerly fluent in Spanish and confident fluency could be re-attained quickly

Extracurriculars:
Active social fraternity member in college holding various officer and leadership positions including recording secretary, corresponding secretary, sergeant at arms, fraternity educator, and social committee chairman.

Regularly involved in volunteer work with fraternity (motto of fraternity is "The Great Joy of Serving Others") such as cooking for and feeding the homeless and first responders on Thanksgiving, and Meals on Wheels

Worked as a grader for a Mechanics of Materials course for two years.

Participated in the Drexel University Hess Undergraduate Research Scholar program

Recording secretary for Pi Tau Sigma

Two, six-month engineering internships with orthopaedic device company

Extraprofessionals:
Participant in company mentoring program (as mentee)

I have taken a few MOOCs including a full certificate program in project management and two courses in business strategy in my free time.

Hobbies:
Chess, Weight Lifting, Investing, Language Learning (in case its a good indication of commitment, I have a 2135 day streak on Duolingo studying German, Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, and Dutch)

Identified Application Weaknesses:
I do not see any clear way to quantify the impact of any of my professional work. I have had the unfortunate experience of being moved between projects often due to rapidly expanding business and product priority changes dictated by product management (fully out of my control) and I have therefore not yet launched any product from which I would normally want to list associated revenues. I also cannot then quantify anything regarding project timelines or budgets.

Identified Application Strengths:
I am confident I would receive extremely positive professional recommendation letters from business leaders of engineering and product management and potentially including an INSEAD alumnus (son of company owner and strategic director of EMEA)

Post-MBA Goals:
MBB consultant - I love data analysis and problem-solving and nothing drives me more than learning (or kills my motivation more than being intellectually stagnant).

Hi DrDoNothin thanks for sharing a detailed profile description.

Your profile has several strong aspects that INSEAD would favorably consider, including a solid academic background (particularly in research), international exposure, language skills, and strong recommendations. However, I would like to highlight areas that require more introspection and preparation as you work on your INSEAD application.

1. Most importantly, your leadership capabilities, or what I like to call "career progression," will be of particular interest to the school. As you are a relatively senior (than average) candidate, INSEAD will want to know about your professional and personal growth over the past decade. While research profiles are differentiated for the MBA program, it is essential to be strategic in communicating the challenges you faced during your research work, which was a significant period in your history as a doctoral candidate. You should also demonstrate functional responsibilities in relevant projects, showing your ability to manage and engage stakeholders. While speaking about your research work, it's still suggested that your experiences and stories highlight your hands-on experience, your ability to engage with industry leaders to gather insights, and your skill in contextualizing business problems.

As an engineer working on new-age product development in the medical field, I believe you will have ample potential for storytelling in developing product concepts, creating product design specifications, designing and testing prototypes, identifying and solving design problems, and collaborating with teams to ensure a successful product launch. Additionally, as you are interested in MBB, you could leverage your passion for working in your current role/industry and a desire to expand the development of safe, effective, and innovative medical devices that improve patient outcomes at a tier 1 management consulting company.

What I am saying here is that you need to have a solid vision behind your decision to do an INSEAD MBA, and that should make your career decisions in the past seem coherent with what you plan to do shortly and in the long term. Why do you want to do an MBA? Why do you need an MBA to get into MBB? Why do you want to get into MBB? What problems do you want to solve as a management consultant in the industry? What issues have you seen in the industry through your prior experience? Why would MBB value your expertise? Addressing such questions in your essays will be very important.

2. If you feel challenged in quantifying the impact of your professional work due to frequent project changes and lack of launched products, you can focus on your contributions to each project and how they have positively impacted the team's output and company's P&L (think in terms of time saved, costs saved and so on). You can emphasize how you effectively communicated with team members and stakeholders or how you improved a specific process or system within the project. You can also mention any recognition or awards you have received for your work. As an engineer, you should be aware of your contributions; it is crucial to logically evaluate your impact on the company's business.

3. Also, I suggest you reach out to folks working at MBB who have a similar background. Research the type of projects that you would like to work on. Reflect on the insights you gather and use these insights to make your essays stronger.

Overall, you have a great profile. Focus on getting a good GMAT score and presenting an impressive and authentic application.

Best wishes
