Hi! Would love to get feedback on profile (where can I improve and what are my current chances at INSEAD)

Indian, Male, Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from University of Hong Kong (global top 20 in the field) with academic scholarship awarded (top 20% of the class in term so franking as the GPA is on a bell curve). Had an exchange program at NTU Singapore (nominated by faculty for the same)

total 4 years workex:

1) Cofounded a startup in greentech (based in HK and Indonesia) and had successful exit after graduation (total 2 years including during final year of uni)
2) Worked in singapore office (remotely) in modular construction company (1 yr)
3) Working in fortune 500 firm with their Asia HQ in Hong Kong currently (2 yrs.)

Worked on cross-functional and international projects since uni in Myanmar (worked with farmers to reduce freshwater usage for their crops), Indonesia (startup collaborations and prototype testing with local fishermen to collect plastic pollution), Malaysia (large infrastructure project) and Philippines (also related to startup work). All related to sustainability, engineering and greentech.

GRE: 319 (Q-166, V-153)

As a passion project worked with founder as advisor for a hydroponic farm in Delhi, grew it from a 5 employee company to 50+ alongside full time job.

Hi Ayush,

Here's my evaluation of your profile:

Academics- sound good. An international education followed by an exchange instantly help you met the international exposure criteria. However, there's more coming on that via your work experience, so I will cover that later. You haven't mentioned your GPA and I hope its not low. It will be an important metric in your candidature. The current GRE score is low, including the quant score. This is where your undergrad GPA score becomes more important, specifically how well did you fare in your quant subjects. Despite what the GPA is, I would recommend taking another shot at the GRE. While we have consistently helped Indian women apply successfully with lower GMAT/ GRE scores, but the competition does tend to get more for the Indian guys, so something to keep in mind.

Work experience- I am not sure if you have four years' work experience. B-schools normally count only full time work experience. The greentech startup you founded seems to be while still at college, so that would not count towards the FT experience. Similarly, is the remote experience a full time opportunity? If not. you may just have the past two years' experience to show as full time. This will still make you eligible to apply (from their website: INSEAD does not have an absolute requirement for years of work experience, although at least two years is strongly encouraged). However, you may want to evaluate whether it makes sense to apply this year or next.

Its not clear whether the WE you have described is part of your full time job or a combination of job and ECA. However, I like it. The two things that stand out are - the high international experience and interest in sustainability. These are great themes to build your essays, possibly even use them to show a differentiation in goals. But, I would need more info to go deeper into that.

So, while I see a great profile in the making, I haven't fully understood some elements about you- the acads, the nature of full time work experience and your goals to be specific. Feel free to write to me at contact@mbadecoder.com and I would be happy to schedule a call.

Hi Everyone,

I have only recently decided I would definitely like to pursue my MBA, and I would appreciate any feedback on my profile. From what I have read, I think my profile could be pretty interesting since it is non-traditional, but I definitely lack extra-professional activities. I have hobbies which I list below, but I am not a member of any clubs or organizations. I have also not yet taken the GMAT or even any practice exams to estimate my performance, which I know will be an important factor. I have just ordered some study materials to begin my preparation.

Please let me know how my profile currently looks and offer any advice on how I might polish it up. I will probably not be applying for 2 years so that I can get my German citizenship, nail the GMAT, and save up at least a portion of the tuition fees.

Basics:
Male, 32, US citizen, nearly 10-year resident of Germany with permanent residency and intentions of dual citizenship (pending proposed change of German law),

Work Experience:
Approaching 5 years as a product development engineer (promoted to senior engineer last year) with an orthopeadic device company

Serve as project manager for multi-year development projects with teams including representatives from 10 different functional groups, but within a Weak Matrix structure. Other details can be provided or found under my LinkedIn profile (in/nicholausmeyers/)

Currently leading multifunctional team to improve internal processes for design verification (testing) activities and as team lead serving as part of a larger group largely consisting of managers and directors (I am the lowest level employee on this team) to make guiding decisions regarding the future of our overall design control procedures.

Also currently driving an effort to have a quality engineering team established in our German office (all QEs currently working from the US) in order to increase our local project efficiency. The proposal is currently being reviewed at the director level.


Recognized as a technical expert often consulting on the projects of other engineers, including those in higher technical roles, and all yearly reviews have been evaluated as „exceeds expectations“

Identified Application Weaknesses:
I do not see any clear way to quantify the impact of any of my professional work. I have had the unfortunate experience of being moved between projects often due to rapidly expanding business and product priority changes dictated by product management (fully out of my control) and I have therefore not yet launched any product from which I would normally want to list associated revenues. I also cannot then quantify anything regarding project timelines or budgets.

Identified Application Strengths:
I am confident I would receive extremely positive professional recommendation letters from business leaders of engineering and product management and potentially including an INSEAD alumnus (son of company owner and strategic director of EMEA)

Post-MBA Goals:
MBB consultant - I love data analysis and problem-solving and nothing drives me more than learning (or kills my motivation more than being intellectually stagnant).

Your profile has several strong aspects that INSEAD would favorably consider, including a solid academic background (particularly in research), international exposure, language skills, and strong recommendations. However, I would like to highlight areas that require more introspection and preparation as you work on your INSEAD application.

1. Most importantly, your leadership capabilities, or what I like to call "career progression," will be of particular interest to the school. As you are a relatively senior (than average) candidate, INSEAD will want to know about your professional and personal growth over the past decade. While research profiles are differentiated for the MBA program, it is essential to be strategic in communicating the challenges you faced during your research work, which was a significant period in your history as a doctoral candidate. You should also demonstrate functional responsibilities in relevant projects, showing your ability to manage and engage stakeholders. While speaking about your research work, it's still suggested that your experiences and stories highlight your hands-on experience, your ability to engage with industry leaders to gather insights, and your skill in contextualizing business problems.

As an engineer working on new-age product development in the medical field, I believe you will have ample potential for storytelling in developing product concepts, creating product design specifications, designing and testing prototypes, identifying and solving design problems, and collaborating with teams to ensure a successful product launch. Additionally, as you are interested in MBB, you could leverage your passion for working in your current role/industry and a desire to expand the development of safe, effective, and innovative medical devices that improve patient outcomes at a tier 1 management consulting company.

What I am saying here is that you need to have a solid vision behind your decision to do an INSEAD MBA, and that should make your career decisions in the past seem coherent with what you plan to do shortly and in the long term. Why do you want to do an MBA? Why do you need an MBA to get into MBB? Why do you want to get into MBB? What problems do you want to solve as a management consultant in the industry? What issues have you seen in the industry through your prior experience? Why would MBB value your expertise? Addressing such questions in your essays will be very important.

2. If you feel challenged in quantifying the impact of your professional work due to frequent project changes and lack of launched products, you can focus on your contributions to each project and how they have positively impacted the team's output and company's P&L (think in terms of time saved, costs saved and so on). You can emphasize how you effectively communicated with team members and stakeholders or how you improved a specific process or system within the project. You can also mention any recognition or awards you have received for your work. As an engineer, you should be aware of your contributions; it is crucial to logically evaluate your impact on the company's business.

3. Also, I suggest you reach out to folks working at MBB who have a similar background. Research the type of projects that you would like to work on. Reflect on the insights you gather and use these insights to make your essays stronger.

Overall, you have a great profile. Focus on getting a good GMAT score and presenting an impressive and authentic application.

Hi,

As I guess you already know, you would be among the older applicants applying to INSEAD. In this scenario, you should present a very strong reason for why you need an MBA and a second MBA at that. A transition from Tech consulting to consulting may not be so difficult without another MBA degree, so this is something you should think deeper about OR make a very strong case for yourself. The optional letters would be a good space to explain this.

You have not given much description about your work exp, so I looked up your old posts. The work experience sounds alright and there's nothing much I can add there without knowing the details.

In terms of chances, well, I would say, give it a shot and put your best foot forward. Attending events and making connections with the admissions team to discuss your profile could be the best way to earn some love from them.

I'd recommend not applying in R3 for the January intake as a lot of seats would have gone by then.

Current Industry: Tech Consulting
Previous Industry: Investment Banking at a Bulge Bracket Bank

I see much potential for storytelling and leadership experiences. Your career goals also align well with the broader USA recruitment scene for internationals.
Honestly, I am a bit confused by US school responses, but the outcome may have depended on factors such as your GPA, approach to applications and essays, age factor, and reasons for pursuing a second MBA.

For INSEAD, though your international work experience is very limited, don't let that hold you back from applying. If possible, get exceptionally strong recommendations from your counterparts or senior colleagues in Europe. Additionally, if your colleagues in the EU can signal how willing they might be to offer you positions post-MBA, this can position you as a highly employable candidate and enhance your INSEAD prospects. As for the other aspects, showcase your fast growth trajectory, industry knowledge, and future visionary plans in your application. Let your passion and determination shine through and show the admissions committee why you belong at INSEAD. :)

Hi! Would love to get feedback on profile (where can I improve and what are my current chances at INSEAD)

Indian, Male, Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from University of Hong Kong (global top 20 in the field) with academic scholarship awarded (top 20% of the class in term so franking as the GPA is on a bell curve). Had an exchange program at NTU Singapore (nominated by faculty for the same)

total 4 years workex:

1) Cofounded a startup in greentech (based in HK and Indonesia) and had successful exit after graduation (total 2 years including during final year of uni)
2) Worked in singapore office (remotely) in modular construction company (1 yr)
3) Working in fortune 500 firm with their Asia HQ in Hong Kong currently (2 yrs.)

Worked on cross-functional and international projects since uni in Myanmar (worked with farmers to reduce freshwater usage for their crops), Indonesia (startup collaborations and prototype testing with local fishermen to collect plastic pollution), Malaysia (large infrastructure project) and Philippines (also related to startup work). All related to sustainability, engineering and greentech.

GRE: 319 (Q-166, V-153)

As a passion project worked with founder as advisor for a hydroponic farm in Delhi, grew it from a 5 employee company to 50+ alongside full time job.

Your profile has a strong foundation, with an impressive GMAT score. However, there is a lack of brand name in your undergrad but you are definitely compensating for it with the kind of brands you’ve worked with and international exposure.

When applying, you can showcase your leadership abilities and impact in your current or previous roles. One approach is to identify a project or initiative that you led, describe how you inspired and motivated your team to achieve success, and quantify the impact in terms of financial or operational outcomes. Another is to highlight a time when you identified an opportunity for improvement and developed and implemented a plan to drive change, emphasising the results you achieved.

Addition of volunteering experience will do wonders for you but if you don’t have that then it would be better to join any club or NGO to showcase inclination towards society.

If you've worked with clients or stakeholders, describing a challenging situation or conflict that you successfully managed is a great way to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, and find creative solutions. Lastly, if you have mentored or coached junior colleagues, you can share stories of how you supported their development and helped them achieve their career goals.

On the academic front, your GRE score appears on the lower end, are you planning for a retake? You have mentioned scholarships and an exchange program, it will help you cover up for your low score. Any additional academic accolades from your end will help you display your academic potential.

2. Leadership skills
3. International motivation
4. Academics
I can see a mix of all these in your profile.

Coming to your work experience, learnings from your startup experience would be a good booster to your profile. Apart from that, 3 years of work experience seems decent for INSEAD. I would not say that it’ll land you in a very comfortable position regarding your work experience but you’ll have to make that extra effort to get in. I would like to congratulate you for a stellar GMAT score. You haven’t shared much about your academics apart from your CFA level 1. Also since you belong to the upper end of the age group and are wanting a second MBA, you should have a very strong reason to why an MBA question by the AdComs.

The major highlight of your application would be your extensive work experience. You will need to demonstrate your USP to the AdComs and thus establish your fit to the school. This can be done by mentioning your major achievements during your work tenure, you will need to highlight the impact created by your end in terms of revenue and any specific instance where you went beyond your line of duty to stand out from the pool of applicants.

INSEAD evaluates your potential based of the following criteria:

1. Ability to contribute
2. Leadership skills
3. International motivation
4. Academics

I can clearly certify on the academic part considering your GMAT score. However extensive work would be needed in terms of point 1 and 3. Your work experience should take care of the leadership skills part.

Your Extra curricular activities seem a bit generic. Try highlighting the social activity part since that is one parameter AdComs look for in an application. Your post MBA goals are also something that you’ll need to work on. Since you are targeting INSEAD, you will need to establish how an MBA from INSEAD would help you achieve your goals.

Since you are targeting INSEAD, you may want to read our article on How to get into INSEAD, to gain some insights of the school. Recently, we have helped an applicant to get into INSEAD with 328 GRE. She had a low GPA and 8 years of work experience in family business.

I'd like receiving views from current/ex grads (and possibly from admissions team) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business schools.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitment for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

Hi Debayan,

The best way to get the Gmat over is by taking the test. It seems like your fear of the test may become a hindrance itself. So my first suggestion is to approach the exam withj an open mind (yeah, start loving the GMAT).
The good thing is you can test multiple times, so atleast you will know where you really stand.
Talking about time constraints- other than the GMAT being time constrained, there is also this thing about when you take the test. Pushing the test closer to deadlines can really pressurize applicants and juggling the applications and the test prep can be very difficult. So, if you are planning to apply by September deadlines, try finishing off the test by mid June so that you have another chance for a retake, if need be, and ample time for doing your apps.
Other than that, your profile is good. Depending upon your preference for a 1 year/ 2 year MBA program, you could apply to several programs in Europe and/or USA.

Hello, Everyone

I'd like receiving views from current/ex grads (and possibly from admissions team) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business schools.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitment for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:

    Academics – Strong GPA and good class percentile.

    GMAT – Looking at your academic track record (NIT pass out with 2nd rank in branch) I do not feel that GMAT will be a very tough nut to crack for you 😊. Start with the GMAT preparation. It typically takes 6-8 weeks to study for the exam and make sure to take some mock tests under time constraints to gauge your level. As most of the schools have deadlines in September, get done with the GMAT by June-July so that you have ample time for your apps.

    Work Experience –Your experience looks good with strong cross-cultural exposure. Good recommendation letters will add more value to your application. You need to make an impactful resume quantifying the results, leadership skills, etc. (like the number of candidates hired by the HR team with your help, etc).

    Extracurricular activities/Volunteer Work – Freelancing for 4 years- Again a good talking point but would really want to know more details about it. Also, tell us about your hobbies and interests. Any community experience?

    Your career goals – We would love to know more about your motivation for the career change. Anything that you have done so far that is in sync with your post-MBA goals.

All in all sounds like you have a good profile! Stop worrying about GMAT and just give your best 😊.

You have impressive academic achievements and work experience, but to make your MBA application even stronger, it's important to highlight and quantify your unique strengths and accomplishments. A strong GMAT score, extracurricular activities, clear career goals, and strong letters of recommendation are all important aspects of your application. Additionally, highlighting your leadership and impact at work can make you stand out from other candidates.

To showcase your leadership skills, describe how you motivated and guided a team towards success. Provide specific examples of how your work has made a positive difference to the company to demonstrate your impact. If you have contributed to any innovative projects, be sure to mention them, demonstrating your creativity and ability to think outside the box. The admissions committee wants to see evidence of your leadership potential, so make sure you demonstrate your ability to lead and make a positive impact in your application.

Aiming for a GMAT score of 700 or higher can improve your chances of being admitted to top schools like INSEAD, LBS, Warwick, ESSEC, and HEC Paris. Keep in mind that a high GMAT score alone won't guarantee admission, so it's important to also focus on other aspects of your application and present a well-rounded profile.
