Hello, Everyone

I'd like receiving views from current/ex grads (and possibly from admissions team) on my profile. To follow my career ambitions, I've been exploring possibilities of doing an MBA, but only from a well reputed business schools.

Work experience:

2016-20
Infosys, Senior engineer

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitment for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

I'll be grateful if you can give a profile evaluation, based on a cursory glance of my profile.

Hi everyone,

I'd love an objective an honest opinion based on my profile for INSEAD.

Background:
Born and raised in Malaysia, but I now also have an Australian passport.

Education:
Undergraduate at a private university in New York 3.5 GPA majoring in Finance
Very active at extra curricular (I was one of those kids)
- President of Finance society
- Student Government rep for the business school
- Resident Assistant

Work experience (10 years):
Tech Startup - Chicago (3 years)
- Started career in Chicago at Tech consulting startup as a Software Implementation consultant. Shortly after I moved onto another tech software company that was acquired by Oracle.
PwC - Sydney (6 years)
- Moved to Sydney, and joined PwC in their data analytics team as a Senior Consultant.
- Promoted twice in 5 years to Manager and then Senior Manager
- Did a 4 month secondment to Vancouver for a special project as well
PwC - London (just under 1 year currently)
- Currently on a 2 year secondment to the PwC London office.
- Senior Manager in their Digital Product space, creating custom software solutions + managing digital products.
- Heavily involved in business development and growth
- Very active in roles beyond day-to-day delivery (PwC's People Council, I&D council, LGBT leadership group)

Extra:
Part of the LGBT+ community. Volunteered as the Director of Data at a LGBT+ not for profit for a year. Very active in PwC's LGBT people group.

PostMBA goals:
2 possible directions
1. Move into a little bit more of strategy consulting in the tech space, rather than just designing and implementing -- especially in the government/policy/health area
OR
2. Eventually be Chief Product Officer at a tech startup. I've always been a fantastic executor, never really saw myself as the ideas person, but the person that can bring anything to life and execute it to perfection.

Biggest weakness(?) in my profile:
Age and Years of experience. I'll be 35 by the time the programme starts, and I would have 10+years of experience. But I really really want to immerse myself with 'people like me' - that are international, 'crazy' and motivated people everyday. I've just need that burst of excitement and enthusiasm again with a diverse set of people around me thats so eager to learn and grow because I feed off of energy like that.

Biggest strength:
My diverse and vast experience, having lived and worked in Malaysia, Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Sydney and now London. I have proven that I can adapt to a multicultural environment and thrive. I have much to give back as well, especially in the tech side of things and in design thinking which is something I do at PwC now. I'm not one of those that just sit back, bury my head in books and study -- but I'm one of those that would absolutely raise my hand and voice my opinion, very much proven from my involvement beyond my role at PwC and during university (and truthfully all my live - just a very vocal person). Just can't wait to feel like the stupidest person in the room.

Questions:
Apart from rating my profile, I am currently working on the GMAT, I'll aim for something around 700, but what are some of my chances paired with a rough GMAT score?

On many levels I think this is a dream profile. You have demonstrated leadership, contribution, international motivation, and academics, outside of the GMAT which seems to be a question mark at the moment. Being underrepresented will help too, and hopefully take some pressure off the need for a high GMAT (that said, INSEAD is very fast paced program, so they need the quant to be strong). I really like the strong track record of contribution, sometimes the concern with older applicants is that you might not blend in socially, but I get a feeling that you would, and that you would be highly engaged.

I imagine that you might be applying for round three INSEAD for January intake, which is nice because you have the internship., it's a bummer because there are not many scholarships open in round three and beyond. And I do think that you have the kind of profile that would be competitive for those. INSEAD does often refer/accept candidates with 10+ years of work experience to their executive MBA. But if that happens, I would probably recommend you go for R1 for one of the Sloan fellow options like Stanford MSX or SF MBA. Maybe Kellogg 1-year (average GMAT for Kellogg 1-year is 700 and they are strong in both health and consulting).

If you are applying to fall deadlines, also apply to LBS, possibly a backup to IESE. I love your profile but the age/experience and GMAT make things hard to predict; I like LBS and IESE because they take older applicants, and you can do an internship and re-recruit afterwards if you didn’t like it; LBS you can even do 2 internships or Entrepreneurship Summer School and an internship).

I might even recommend that you go for Wharton-Lauder you are a little bit old for a US program, but I think it’s worth trying, they have a quota for the program, and you’re a good fit.

Beyond the bilingual/intl bit, check out the social and governance factors for business major, health care management major and Business Economics and Public Policy concentration. If your application is done well, I think you could get a decent scholarship whereas EU programs are less generous with scholarships. Wharton groups are student-led. In the contribution essay, do some research and lead with a vision on the unique things you could bring about on campus. IntMBA24

GMAT: 740 (Q50, V39)
Current Industry: Tech Consulting
Previous Industry: Investment Banking at a Bulge Bracket Bank
International exposure: 10 weeks in London during Investment Banking. Regular collaboration on current work with European counterparts but currently located in India.

Cleared CFA Level 1

Undergrad: Engineering from an average Indian college with above average grades
Masters: MBA from an Indian B-School with average grades

Extra curriculars: Competitive sports person with regional and inter college wins | App development and Hackathons during undergrad | Trained in 3 Indian dance forms | Fundraising for an NGO during school | Leisure travel to 6 countries

Post-MBA goal: Consulting
Long-term goal: Rise up the ranks and drive transformation in my target industry

I applied to 6 US schools in R2. Currently waitlisted at an M7 and a T10.

On your profile:
- IB to Tech Consulting is quite a move. Were you in the FinTech/analytics space within IB? With experience in both investment banking and tech consulting, you can demonstrate a versatile skill set and adaptability. Make sure to highlight your achievements and contributions in both roles.
- You do have some international experience, which will help, but it is not substantial. Will need to understand your work and how closely you work in foreign markets to comment definitively on this aspect. The travel to 6 countries helps as well. Your collaboration with European counterparts can showcase your ability to work in cross-cultural teams and adapt to different working styles.
- ECA is good and INSEAD values that. Your involvement in competitive sports, app development, hackathons, dance, and fundraising activities indicates a well-rounded personality. Focus on the impact you made and the skills you developed through these activities.
- Your goals are not fully clear at this point. You seem to be coming from consulting and heading to consulting, and wanting to drive transformation in a target industry. Which industry is that? What will an MBA give you and what will INSEAD give you?
- CFA (L1) has minimal impact.

Hi debayanb

- Can you shed more light on your international experience? While you have 7+ years of good professional experience, it is not clear if that experience is global or whether you are simply working with global colleagues in India.
- Your desire for change is good, but you will need to ultimately fructify it into a solid goal. Which role/industry (could be more than one at this stage) are you interested in?
- On the GMAT, you might consider working with a 1-on-1 coach. Such a coach can usually provide more customized guidance that would not be available cohort-based programs or in self-study.

To begin with, let us address your main concern, GMAT is an important parameter when looking at top MBA schools globally, A score of 700+ would be very essential for your profile. Your other academics look decent, and combined with a good GMAT score, it’ll enhance your chances of getting an admit.

Work experience: 7+ years of experience will be the major highlight of your application. Your international exposure and leadership skills are important aspects of your profile. You will have to highlight instances where you went beyond your line of duty to achieve results. Identifying your USP is the major task ahead. Top B-schools look for an overall robust profile that is made up of a lot of parameters.

You haven’t mentioned your ECs, they add diversity to your profile and are an equally important parameter. Coming to your goals, you will have to highlight the reason behind your desire for transit. You should also classify your goals into short and long-term and align your goals with the values of the schools you are targeting.

Work experience:

2016-20

2020-23 (currently)
PwC, Senior Consultant

Education:
Class 10, CBSE (87%)
Class 12, CBSE (77%)
B.Tech (NIT Agartala) (8.3 CGPA, 2nd rank in our branch)

I've won many client recommendations during my stint at both the firms. I am fairly visible to the leadership team at my firm. Hopefully, I can draw decent recommendation letters from my contacts and manager. My clients have been from all around the world. I have exposure towards working with people from Germany, US, UK and a couple more European countries.

I've also worked as a Freelancer (Content writer) during my B.Tech years (all 4 of them). I've never received a review less than 4 stars from any of my clients.

My concern is that I dont test well in a time constrained environment. I've never really taken a GMAT mock test but most of the questions that people seem to solve so easily here, appear daunting to me. But I could gather a score of 600-700 in GMAT.

Currently, I play a senior role within my team at PwC, where I help my team mates with their professional matters. I also play an active part in recruitment for our team.

Why do I want to do an MBA? Honestly, I want to change my field of work. Areas such as finance, economics and business interest me. While I'm excellent at the work I do (IT consultant), I would like to explore other areas.

Tech Startup - Chicago (3 years)
- Started career in Chicago at Tech consulting startup as a Software Implementation consultant. Shortly after I moved onto another tech software company that was acquired by Oracle.
PwC - Sydney (6 years)
- Moved to Sydney, and joined PwC in their data analytics team as a Senior Consultant.
- Promoted twice in 5 years to Manager and then Senior Manager
- Did a 4 month secondment to Vancouver for a special project as well
PwC - London (just under 1 year currently)
- Currently on a 2 year secondment to the PwC London office.
- Senior Manager in their Digital Product space, creating custom software solutions + managing digital products.
- Heavily involved in business development and growth
- Very active in roles beyond day-to-day delivery (PwC's People Council, I&D council, LGBT leadership group)

Extra:
Part of the LGBT+ community. Volunteered as the Director of Data at a LGBT+ not for profit for a year. Very active in PwC's LGBT people group.

PostMBA goals:
2 possible directions
1. Move into a little bit more of strategy consulting in the tech space, rather than just designing and implementing -- especially in the government/policy/health area

Biggest weakness(?) in my profile:
Age and Years of experience. I'll be 35 by the time the programme starts, and I would have 10+years of experience. But I really really want to immerse myself with 'people like me' - that are international, 'crazy' and motivated people everyday. I've just need that burst of excitement and enthusiasm again with a diverse set of people around me thats so eager to learn and grow because I feed off of energy like that.

Biggest strength:
My diverse and vast experience, having lived and worked in Malaysia, Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Sydney and now London. I have proven that I can adapt to a multicultural environment and thrive. I have much to give back as well, especially in the tech side of things and in design thinking which is something I do at PwC now. It's a positive indication for the admissions committee when an older applicant demonstrates genuine enthusiasm to participate and excel in the fast-paced and rigorous INSEAD MBA program. Given your extensive industry and global experience, you are a great fit for the school.

But you will encounter questions about your motivation for pursuing an MBA at this stage of your career. It is crucial to justify why, despite your successful career trajectory and global experience, you believe an INSEAD MBA is necessary and what you aim to achieve at this point in your professional journey. Competition can be intense at the extremes of the professional experience spectrum, so effectively communicating your aspirations is key.

Attending INSEAD can have a dual focus (in addition to career objective), including a strong emphasis on the DEI initiatives that the school has been deeply committed to in recent years. The cohorts at INSEAD have been actively and passionately driving change through collaborative efforts and rallying with local civic and government bodies at both the campuses. These efforts aim to improve diversity and inclusion and have been gradually but effectively making a positive impact.

Having probably the longest applications among all B-schools, INSEAD is genuinely interested in understanding how applicants can add value to the cohort by reflecting on their past experiences and sharing their learnings at all stages of peer-to-peer engagements. GMAT: yet to appear
Current Industry: for almost 10 years
IAS allied govt of INDIA finance management for Largest paramilitary force in the world . Previous handled the payment bank’s operations for connecting to unbanked in government of India.
Previous industry : EPC in oil and gas industry with experience of 6 years both in Germany and India
International exposure: 2 years in Germany during oil and gas engineering
Associated with design development and engineering of raslafan gas projects , syn coal gasification projects in Sasol South Africa.
Previously worked in public sector unit ONGC in upstream engineering in Bombay high and off shore in Mehsana india

Holds bachelor’s of technology in mechanical engineering with CGPA 3.2
Did masters in public administration while working in government of india


Extra curriculars: Competitive sports person with regional and inter college wins | development of CAMA during COVID 19 For the help to marginalised section of the society

You have done some stellar work and your profile is solid, but you may simply have too much experience for the INSEAD full-time MBA, if that is what you are looking for. Your profile would be more suitable for the EMBA.

You should also look for mid-career full-time options. Please see this article too.

Post MBA Goals:
Short Term : MBB Consulting (Global career with more front end experience)
Long Term: Portfolio value creation with PE firms

Work Exp : 5 years with Bain & Company (Experience in working on commercial due diligence/PE consulting projects with colleagues from EMEA and APAC regions)
- ~2 years experience of leading teams of 4-6 members across various CDD cases
- Helped a large PE firm identify multiple attractive targets to invest in across APAC region

Awards and Recognition :
- Fast track promotion to Project Leader

Overall, you have a good profile for INSEAD. I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be a solid candidate, but here is where you are vulnerable:

GMAT score is good, but not outstanding, especially for a candidate coming from a competitive demographic. It's up to you whether you wish to retake it. You're probably find without retaking but it's something we feel obligated to note.

Extracurricular activities will probably be sufficient, but aren't stellar. We're not seeing deep involvement. Are you also a participant in work-related initiatives? That can help round out a candidate's profile.

Your career goal isn't terribly unique. In fact, it's very common and might detract from your candidacy. You may end up pursuing this path but we would recommend you consider something a bit more original to help differentiate you.
