Hello Everyone, What an amazing question emphasize the importance of a couple points while solving GMAT C porblems: i. read the original sentence very carefully ii. consider the non-underlined portion of the sentence as well while selecting the correct answer choice At e-GMAT, we keep harping on the first point, that is, to spend a good amount of time with the original sentence to understand what the author intends to convey. The given official sentence presents comparison. Hence, it becomes imperative that we identify the intended comparison in the sentence. The sentence says that the craftwork of a particular group of women was not appreciated very much. However, another group of women got name, fame, and money for their craftwork. If we carefully study the structure of the sentence, it won't take us too long to understand that the non-underlined portion of the sentence defines the entities that are meant to be compared in the sentence. The non-underlined portion reads often received x, y, and z for their craftwork . This makes it clear that the subject of the verb received must be Native American women of the Plains tribes . Hence, the sentence intends to compare the two group of women in this sentence. Comparison between any other entities will be erroneous. Choice B is the only answer choice to present the intended comparison between the two groups of women and hence stands correct. Now Choice D is another answer choice that does not seem to have any grammatical or logical issue if we only concentrate on the text of this choice. However, putting this choice together with the rest of the sentence will make it clear that per the context of the sentence the women got x,y, and z for their craftwork. The craftwork did not get those for their craftwork. Hence, a quick look at the non-underlined portion of the sentence while selecting the correct answer can definitely save us a critical error. In a haste, I thought that using "craftwork" twice would make the answer option B redundant and marked the answer option C; while marking answer option C did not check the error that got introduced because of incorrect comparison. Silly mistake.

Can someone explain why D is wrong? As per breakup below it does have the right pronouns and the meaning.
The  craftwork of many women settlers  in the nineteenth-century American West  was accorded low status  (SINGULAR + refers to right subject), while  that of the  (appears to refer to craftwork of AWwomen) Native American women of the Plains tribes  often received x,y and Z.

Would love to understand the error in my understanding above

Option A is wrong because "low status" is being compared with "Native American women". So the comparison is wrong here.

Option B is correct . It compares "women settlers" with "Native American women".

Option C is wrong because "Native American women" is being compared with " the craftwork".

Option D is wrong because "that of " in ".....while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes........" refers to "the craftwork".
So the sentence reads " .......the craftwork of the Native American women of the Plains tribes often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork.......... ". This is logically wrong.
