In a haste, I thought that using "craftwork" twice would make the answer option B redundant and marked the answer option C; while marking answer option C did not check the error that got introduced because of incorrect comparison. Silly mistake.

Any suggestion, how to avoid such silly mistakes?

Correct Idiomatic usage is : Unlike X ,Y

Among the given options only (B) uses the same correctly...

Unlike the low status accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-centuryAmerican West, Native American women of the Plains tribes s often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork.

We need to make sure that we are comparing the correct entities when comparison sentences are given.

(A) Unlike the low status accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, Native American women of the Plains tribes
=> Comparing status vs NA women - so wrong.
(B) Unlike many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, whose craftwork was accorded low status, Native American women of the Plains tribes
=> Women vs women - correct.
(C) Native American women of the Plains tribes, unlike the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West,
=> Women vs craftwork => wrong
(D) The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status, while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes => No proper comparison.
(E) While low status was accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, that of Native American women of the Plains tribes => Meaning error and lacking proper comparison as desired.

Can someone explain why D is wrong? As per breakup below it does have the right pronouns and the meaning.
The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status (SINGULAR + refers to right subject), while that of the (appears to refer to craftwork of AWwomen) Native American women of the Plains tribes often received x,y and Z.

Would love to understand the error in my understanding above

The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status, while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork.

The non underlined part uses 'their', it cannot refer to 'craftwork', it has to refer to plural 'women'.
I dont think there is anything grammatically wrong with D.

the sentence is trying to cmpare ,,,and proper comparison is done in option B

(E) While low status was accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, that of Native American women of the Plains tribes

The answer is B
Split 1
There is a comparison error in original sentence i.e women are compared to the low status .

Split 2
Notice the non underlined part of the sentence "often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork" their should have a logical antecedent it should refer to Native American women

(A) Unlike the low status accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, Native American women of the Plains tribes

(B) Unlike many women settlers in the nineteenthcentury American West, whose craftwork was accorded low status, Native American women of the Plains tribes

(C) Native American women of the Plains tribes, unlike the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West,

(D) The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status, while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes

(E) While low status was accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, that of Native American women of the Plains tribes

Option A is wrong because "low status" is being compared with "Native American women". So the comparison is wrong here.

Option B is correct . It compares "women settlers" with "Native American women".

Option C is wrong because "Native American women" is being compared with " the craftwork".

Option D is wrong because "that of " in ".....while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes........" refers to "the craftwork".
So the sentence reads " .......the craftwork of the Native American women of the Plains tribes often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork.......... ". This is logically wrong.
The "craftwork" can not receive "public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork".
Also the first part of the sentence ( ".........The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status,......") is in passive and the second part is in active .
So the parallelism error also creeps in. Hence option D is wrong. Similar error is there in option E.

Option E is wrong because "that of" in "........that of Native American women of the Plains tribes..." refers to "low status".
"low status" can not receive "public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork". This is logically wrong.

Option B is the correct answer.
Please give me kudo s if you liked my explanation.

Can anyone justify the place placement of "Whose " in option B? I know that which can have an exception if it doesnt have a appropriate noun before it , but does that apply to whose too?

Unlike the low status accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, Native American women of the Plains tribes often received public recognition, wealth, and prestige for their craftwork

Meaning Analysis: the women settlers in West America made craftwork that did not receive much respect and attention. But, the women settlers of the Plains tribes, who also made craftwork, were given public recognition and more.

Sentence Structure:
Unlike (Comparison marker)
the low status (element 1 of comparison marker)
accorded the craftwork (modifier modifying "low status")
of many women settlers (modifier modifying "craftwork")
in the nineteenth-century American West (modifier modifying "women settlers")
Native American women (element 2 of comparison) (Subject)
of the Plains tribes (prepositional phrase modifying "Native American women")
often received (received - Verb ; often - adverb modifying verb "received")
public recognition, wealth, and prestige (object of the sentence) (and - parallelism marker ; here all the three parallel elements are nouns)
for their craftwork (additional information about the parallel elements)

(A) Unlike the low status accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, Native American women of the Plains tribes. Incorrect. We cannot compare "craftwork" to "Native Americans"

(B) Unlike many women settlers in the nineteenthcentury American West, whose craftwork was accorded low status, Native American women of the Plains tribes. Correct.

(C) Native American women of the Plains tribes, unlike the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, Incorrect. Same as (A)

(D) The craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West was accorded low status, while that of the Native American women of the Plains tribes. Incorrect. "That" refers to craftwork" but if you read the non underlined part of the sentence you will notice the phrase "for their craftwork".So now the sentence reads "the craft work of Native American women.... often receive public recognition.... for their craftwork" Clearly this is illegal

(E) While low status was accorded the craftwork of many women settlers in the nineteenth-century American West, that of Native American women of the Plains tribes. Incorrect. Same as (D)

Correct Choice: (B)

Could anyone specify why the "whose" in option b doesn't modify the noun before (i.e. 19th Century American West)?
