Find total expenditure on Books.
Let expenditure on Books = b , Newspaper = n and periodicals = p
given : b+n+p = 44,000
(1) The expenditure for books was 20 percent greater than the total expenditure for periodicals and newspapers.
=> b = (1+20/100) * (p+n)
=> b=1.2*(p+n) Sufficient as we can find value of b from here
as b+p+n = 44000
=> 1.2(p+n)+(p+n)=44000
=>2.2(p+n)=44000
=>(p+n) = 44000/2.2 =20000
so b = 1.2 (20000) = 24000 or b = 44000-20000 = 24000
Sufficient
(2) The total of the expenditure for books and newspapers was twice the expenditure for periodicals.
=> (b+n)=2p
By this if we calculate we can find b+n but will not be able to find value of b alone. Not sufficient.
(b+n)=2p
so b+n+p=44000
=> 2p+p =44000
=>3p=44000
=>p=44000/3
=> b+n = 2* (44000/3) = 88000/3
Here we know b+n but we cannot find b alone.
Not sufficient

Given b + p + n = 44,000.
Statement (1): b = 1.2(p + n)
Substitute: 1.2(p + n) + p + n = 44,000 ⇒ 2.2(p + n) = 44,000 ⇒ p + n = 20,000 ⇒ b = 1.2 × 20,000 = 24,000. We can find b. Statement (1) sufficient.
Statement (2): b + n = 2p
Using total: (b + n) + p = 44,000 ⇒ 2p + p = 44,000 ⇒ 3p = 44,000 ⇒ p = 44,000/3. We cannot determine b (n unknown), so Statement (2) not sufficient.
