You're right, it's D. However, for now, I recommend that test takers use the following guidance for  research :

1. Treat  to research on/into/about  (verb form) as  incorrect .

2. Be open to  research on/into/about  if  research  is used as a  noun .

So, (a)  the research on , (b)  the research into , and (c)  the research about  should be okay. But (a)  I want  to research on  , (b)  I want  to research into  , and (c)  I want  to research about    should not be considered correct .

At an individual level some test takers could be comfortable using  to research on/into/about , but we'll avoid that as a result of the position taken in  OG2017 #697 .
