Project SC Butler: Day 69 Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Recognized as one of history's most influential scientists, Paul Dirac helped to revolutionize the field of physics; his contributions to the theory of quantum electrodynamics were more valuable than were almost any other physicists of his time.

A) than were almost any other

B) than were those of almost any other

C) than almost any

D) than almost any other

E) as were those of almost any

The best or excellent answers get kudos, which will be awarded after the answer is revealed

I will go for (B)

Two reasons:-

1) Than is important hence E is out
2) Comparison should be logical hence A, C & D are out

"B" for me. Since his contributions should be compared with not a person, but with others' contributions. Thus, B and E are the only choices left. "E" does not use a comparative form "than" (with more valuable). Thus, leaving us with "B".

A) than were almost any other( incorrect comparison, contributions are being compared with other physicists)

B) than were those of almost any other( correct comparison, contribution are being compared with contributions of other physicists)

C) than almost any( incorrect comparison)

D) than almost any other( incorrect comparison)

E) as were those of almost any( more than is correct, more as incorrect)

Will go with choice B

Thanks

B) than were those of almost any other

E) as were those of almost any

His Contributions should be compared with the contributions of other scientists. With this in mind, Only B does this

A, C and D have Incorrect comparison, Comparing contributions with scientists

B) than were those of almost any other - Correct Answer

E) as were those of almost any - valuable than will be used, we are showing a contrast.

Comparison question ... Paul's contributions being compared with the contributions of other physicists.

A) than were almost any other
--> In this option, Paul's contributions are being compared to the physicists themselves!
Complete sentence - his contributions ..... were more valuable than were almost any other physicist of his time
Clearly, it is senseless comparison and hence option A is out.

B) than were those of almost any other
--> Looks good. Correct comparison. Paul's contributions and other physicists'contributions.
Complete sentence - his contributions ...were more valuable than those (the contributions) of almost any other physicist..
Keep option B. Likely answer.

C) than almost any
--> Same reasoning as in option A. Wrong comparison. Paul's contributions vs physicists! Illogical.
Option C is out.

D) than almost any other
--> This option is no better than option A/C. Again the wrong things are being compared here (P's contributions vs physicists).
Option D is out.

E) as were those of almost any
--> part of the sentence before the underline has the comparative word more . This requires "than", so that "more than" can be used to compare two things (two similar things of course! :tongue_opt2 ).
Although this option rightly uses "those" of to compare P's contributions with "those" (the contributions) of other physicists, it can be eliminated because of the above mentioned reason.
Option E is out

Therefore option B is our answer!

Hope this helps :)

Project SC Butler: Day 69 Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Recognized as one of history's most influential scientists, Paul Dirac helped to revolutionize the field of physics; his contributions to the theory of quantum electrodynamics were more valuable than were almost any other physicists of his time.

A) than were almost any other
B) than were those of almost any other
C) than almost any
D) than almost any other
E) as were those of almost any

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

aditya590550 SheilyKamra and CAMANISHPARMAR (poster of awesome PS questions)- welcome!

• The sentence with option A improperly compares the value of Dirac's contributions to physicists of his time.

• In order to correct the parallelism error, use those of almost any, so that the sentence properly compares the value of Dirac's contributions to the value of contributions made by other physicists.

• Eliminate A, C, and D

• Idiomatically, more valuable must be completed by than, rather than as, so eliminate E

The correct answer is B

COMMENTS

The parallelism issue is probably the hardest

Recognized as one of history's most influential scientists, Paul Dirac helped to revolutionize the field of physics; his contributions to the theory of quantum electrodynamics were more valuable than were those of almost any other physicists of his time.

In order to maintain parallelism, we need
• a pronoun/person and pronoun/person
HIS and OF OTHER PHYSICISTS
• a verb and a verb
WERE and WERE
• the object of the verb (noun) and a parallel term (pronoun)
CONTRIBUTIONS and THOSE

There are some really good answers here. People who follow you will be thankful.

Best answers go to aditya590550 , RamSep , and GKomoku (I am glad that Sir Charles helps!) -- regular kudos

RamSep and GKomoku I am bumping you both again. I will try doing so in reverse order; this bumping system may be alphabetical.
I almost never bump on SC Butler. I just wanted to recognize you both for your excellent work and effort on both questions.

Honorable mentions go to KanishkM sonusaini1 and SheilyKamra -- smiley faces

Nicely done!

Although I am late to jump to this, I will give it a go.

Quote:
Concept Tested:- A's Contribution more valuable than B's Contribution.

Quote:

Quote:
A) than were almost any other
A's contribution compared with physicists. wrong.

Quote:
B) than were those of almost any other
A's contribution compared with contribution of other physicists. Great !! Keep it.

Quote:
C) than almost any
A's contribution compared with any physicists. wrong.

Quote:
D) than almost any other
A's contribution compared with physicists. wrong.

Quote:
E) as were those of almost any
'More than' is correct idiom. Not 'More as'

Therefore B is correct.
