Giving RC like solutions to such problems will terrify people.



Total CP= Y/1.2+Y/0.8=Y/0.4 (1/2+1/3)=(5Y/2)(5/6)=25Y/12

Total SP=2Y

Net Loss= 25/12-2=1/12

Loss%=(1/12)/(25/12)*100=4%

Both items are sold at the same amount (Y). Let's asume that y is 100.

C = cost of the bike

1. Sell the new bike with a 20% profit

1.2 (C) = 100
C = 83.333
You earn more or less 17 dollars

2. Sell the old bike at 1 20% loss

0.8(C) = 100
C = 125
You lose 25 dollars

3. If you earn 17 and lose 25 you have a loss of 8 dollars out of a 200 dollars transaction. Which means that you are losing 4% of the investment.­

since selling prices are same total SP=2y
however cost price of new bicycle=y/1.2=10y/12
and that of old bicycle=y/0.8=10y/8
total CP=10y/12+10y/8=50y/24=2.08y
for certain is loss so A,D,E eliminated
also this small loss couldn't account for 20% eliminate b
hence C

OG is C 400$ loss

The formula works for this question as well. Using the standard model where you can calculate the net loss x^2/100, you get overall loss as the percent of the cost price. In the original question, we were asked just that. However, in the question you posted, it is asking in terms of dollars and not percent. If you calcuate the cost price, it comes out to be $40,000 and using the standard model, we know that the loss incurred is 1%. Therefore, 1% of 40,000 is 400. Therefore, Robin's overall loss is $400.
