Solution:

Numbers are:1056, 1095, 1098, 1100, 1126

Sum them and divide the sum by 5

=(1056+1095+1098+1100+1126)/5

= 1095 (option b)

Hi there,

To find which point represents the average, we simply add all 5 numbers and divide by 5.

Step 1: Add all 5 numbers.
1056 + 1095 + 1098 + 1100 + 1126 = 5475

Step 2: Divide by 5.
5475 / 5 = 1095

Since 1095 corresponds to Point B, that's our answer.

Here's a faster shortcut for problems like this: Pick a "base number" close to the middle, like 1100, and just work with the differences.

1056 is -44 from 1100
1095 is -5 from 1100
1098 is -2 from 1100
1100 is 0 from 1100
1126 is +26 from 1100

Sum of differences: -44 + (-5) + (-2) + 0 + 26 = -25
Average of differences: -25 / 5 = -5

Therefore the actual average = 1100 + (-5) = 1095 = Point B.

Common mistake: Some students might guess Point C or Point D because they "look" like they're in the middle of the number line. But the average is a calculated value — it gets pulled toward whichever side has more extreme values. Here, 1056 is much farther below the cluster than 1126 is above it, so the average gets pulled down to 1095.

Key principle: On average problems, don't eyeball the middle — actually compute the sum and divide.
