For Question 2 - It has been mentioned that Darwin "While, however, agreeing on the whole with Scrope and Lyell". That means Darwin agreed with the opposition of Elevation Crater theory as done by Scrope and Lyell. So isn't Darwin also negating the work of Von Duch?

Secondly in Option C it is stated that "Showing that the evidence need not lend itself solely to the interpretation strengthening the truth of 'Elevation-Craters' " - My question is where did Darwin explicitly explained that the evidence is strengthening this theory?

Hello Ayushi2000

Darwin agreed with Scrope and Lyell, who opposed the Elevation-Crater theory. However, the passage states that Darwin's key contribution was showing that the same evidence used by Von Buch could support a different interpretation, not that he outright "negated" the theory.

The passage says: "Darwin was able to show that the facts were capable of a totally different interpretation."

He didn't dismiss the evidence as "meager/unconvincing" he reinterpreted it. While he aligned with critics of the theory, his approach was more delicate than flat negation.

Secondly in Option C it is stated that "Showing that the evidence need not lend itself solely to the interpretation strengthening the truth of 'Elevation-Craters' " - My question is where did Darwin explicitly explained that the evidence is strengthening this theory?

The qouted phrase does not imply Darwin endorsed the theory. Rather, it reflects that Von Buch and others believed the evidence supported their view, whereas Darwin showed it could support an alternative.

The passage notes that Von Buch's interpretation was widely accepted ("almost universally accepted by his countrymen"), so the evidence was seen as strengthening the theory—until Darwin reinterpreted it. Darwin's work demonstrated that the evidence was not exclusive to the Elevation-Crater hypothesis.
