Hi kyro,

Thank you for sharing! Everything you are saying is so true. GMAT prep really takes a lot of time and effort, and most “outsiders” don't realize how much energy you need to put in to get a great score. Thus, I agree that letting your friends and family know that you’ll be less available to them throughout the study process certainly can help manage your stress. Furthermore, I think that it’s always a good idea to study with like-minded test-takers, so you don’t feel isolated throughout your prep.

Again, thank you for sharing, and if you need any advice or a “kick in the butt,” feel free to reach out to me directly, and I’d be happy to jump on a call.

Good luck!

This is a topic that may not be discussed as often but quite possibly the biggest hindrance to my preparation has been mental health. The preparation has pushed a few of my other friends down the vortex as well. Panic attacks are common and life doesn't stop for you. I am writing to give myself a push and to share what has helped.

- Setting expectations with friends and family:
I wasn't able to spend too much time socializing after a full-time job and put in the hours for GMAT. There was a lot of friction because of the time I had to give to the preparation. In hindsight, setting expectations early would have helped. Clearly communicating that you won't be available for the usual work and even asking them for support in different things would be a great way to avoid stress later.

- Finding someone to push you:
Many months passed trying different ways to get into a rhythm of preparation. My preparation lacked consistency. Mental health was an issue too. Fortunately, a colleague is preparing for the same. Two people in the same journey pushing each other was a great way to kick it up a notch.

- Seeking professional help:
This is a no brainer. Where available and possible, a professional can help in managing the stresses that come with the preparation.

- Setting small goals:
Easily achievable goals reduce the pressure and anxiety. Small wins help me gather momentum.

These are some things which have helped me. I have tried meditation too. It really helps especially when I am finding it difficult to sleep. What have you tried that has helped?
