Should I retake?

Hi!

I've just arrived home from writing the GMAT. I've got a 650 score, whereas in the previous tests I was doing for practice I was getting 700. I am thinking about re-taking it, since the only potential loss would be (maximum) the fee that I would need to pay. I could take it next July 12th, otherwise, I would need to go to end of September. I don't see myself studying anymore though. It has been quite tough and I think the problem has not been knowledge, but nerves.

What would you guys do? Would you take it next July 12th and see what happens?

My idea is to enter an MBA for the 2020 intake. Thus, for the schools I am planning to apply, I am good in terms of timings.

It actually depend on the colleges you're targeting, but I'll say, go for retake and give at least one month of intense preparation. And Don't worry, once you decide it, you'll be studying well again.

1) Please describe how you have been studying. For many hours a day and for how many months? What resources have you been using?
 
2) To what programs will you be applying? What are the deadlines for these programs?
 
3) By when would you LIKE to take the GMAT? By when MUST you take the GMAT?
 
4) How many hours a day, on average, can you study between now and your next GMAT?
 
5) What is your GMAT score goal?

6) What were the score breakdowns and dates of any official GMAC practice exams?
7) What was the score breakdown of your latest GMAT?
 
Once I learn a bit more about you, I can provide some detailed advice.

Hi David,

First off, a 650 is a solid score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

Beyond the answers to the other questions that have been asked in this thread, you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi everyone! Sorry for not being around these days.

I just retook the GMAT only 16 days after the first attempt, 690 (+40 points difference in just 2 weeks).

I would say for everyone taking the GMAT in the future: if you are not happy with your first score and think can do better....try it again. Nerves and not knowing what you are gonna be facing impacts negatively the score.

davidcarreno - Congratulation on getting a 650 on the GMAT. You should immediately purchase the ESR; the ESR will provide some great insights on your sub-sectional performance, including timing. A score of 650 shows that your basics are clear and you would thereby need to fine-tune certain areas to increase your score to the 700 level. At this time, you have to focus on your weaknesses and eliminate them one by one.
