E-Gmat VS Top one percent.

Question

Hi all, Can anyone suggest me to choose GMAT coaching in between eGMAT and TOP 1% coaching by Sandeep Gupta.
I have seen some videos of Sandeep Gupta and gone through some of his material, seems that its not so bad. I am confused now. I want a course which is equally good for both verbal and Quant preparation
If anyone have the personal experience with TOP 1%, I request you to give the feedback.

Hi Sanya15,

From your post, it's not clear whether you're just beginning your studies or you have put in some significant study time already. In addition, there are lots of different types of study materials that you might use as you train for the GMAT, so you might need to consider more than just the two options that you've listed.

If you're just beginning, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can access 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a bit of practice first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the general content and question types first, then that's fine - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

I m beginning to start my studies and I don't remember many concepts so I don't think taking a mock right now will be a good idea. 
Btw shouldn't I take the diagnostic test after I complete the classroom program of any coaching institute?

Hi Sanya15,

To score at a high level on the GMAT, you have to have a variety of skills (more than just content knowledge) and the only way to properly assess whether you have those skills or not is to take FULL-LENGTH CATs under realistic conditions AND at regular intervals. That initial Diagnostic CAT Test will help to define some the 'weak spots' that you might need to work on - including pacing, endurance, focus, note-taking, stress, ability to 'let go' of a question, etc. Right now, we have no measure of your skill level in those areas and it's better to know about those potential issues earlier on (so that you can spend more time 'fixing' them) then discovering them too late in the process.

So, do you think I should take that initial diagnostic test after 3-4 weeks if familiarising myself with the exam and some topics? I don't want to write it without knowing nothing.

Hi Sanya15,

I think that you might be getting a bit 'dramatic' about knowing "nothing." Do you really know nothing about Arithmetic/Algebra, grammar, basic logic, how to read a few paragraphs and answer some standard questions about what you just read, etc?

The problem with "putting off" that first practice CAT is that most people create reasons to keep putting it off - and without properly defining your skills, strengths and weaknesses relative to how you perform on a FULL-LENGTH Exam, it's likely that you will end up needing more time to hit your Score Goal than you initially planned for.

Actually I m not confident writing the diagnostic test before atleast familiarising myself with a few topics. Sure I do remember basic maths and English but still, I hope 2 weeks of some practice should work? What say?

Hi Sanya15,

If you wanted to spend 1-2 weeks familiarizing yourself with the question types and 'style' of the Exam, then that should be fine. Keep in mind that you should not try to "master" any of the content in that time. Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores; we're ultimately looking to get a sense of your current skills, strengths and weaknesses (as there will likely be areas that you are not aware of that you will need to work on). Once you have your score, you should report back here and we can discuss the results and come up with a study plan.

Hi Sanya,

When studying for the GMAT you should keep two things in mind:
1) It is a test of how efficiently can you solve the questions in a given time frame
2) how fast can you reach an approximate value to get to the answer.
Therefore, the test assesses your confidence and agility.

I would recommend Sandeep Gupta's Top One Percent for the same. Sandeep focuses on a wide variety of questions (all of which have ether appeared on past GMAT tests or those that are part of the mock tests. Thus, all questions you see are basically prepared by psychometricians, who will catch every small "logic error" you make. I used to find the verbal section more tricky than quant, because I take time to read a log paragraph to be able to fully understand it. However, as part of this course, I have learned how to steer through the grammatical and extremely lengthy paragraphs and actually steer clear through them.

In the quant section, Sandeep focuses on finding tricks to get to the first step in each section, which is the most crucial.

In short, een if you are of the mindset that you just need a 700+ score and aren’t aiming for 760+, choose Sandeep Gupta because if you can master even half the concepts he has to offer, you wouldn’t have to worry about a 700+.
