Even though people love chocolate for its taste and health benefits, not many are aware that chocolate can be quite toxic when fed to dogs. Oblivious to this fact, pet owners frequently feed their dogs with chocolate and soon after, rush their pets to veterinary clinics. However, over the past three years, the number of such cases has gone down drastically in Pupper Town. Clearly, pet owners in this place must have become more aware of the fact that chocolate must not be fed to dogs.

Which of the following statements best helps evaluate the argument?

A. Whether the number of dog owners remained constant over the last 3 years.

B. Whether town adjoining pupper town have experienced a similar decrease.

C. Whether with an increased availability of dog-safety kits, more and more pet owners have opted to treat their pets at home to reduce wastage of time transporting the pet to a veterinary clinic.

D. Whether the cost of insuring a dog has come down over the last three years.

E. Whether the amount of chocolate sold in Pupper Town decreased over the last 3 years.

The premise used to support the conclusion here is that no. of such cases in town (owners rushing their pets to the vet clinics) have gone down implies: people are more aware. What holds this argument is whether people are actually bringing their pets to the clinics once they feed their dogs with chocolate. Option C is an alternative where pet owners don't necessarily bring their pets to the clinics and can instead treat them at home.

A, B, D and E are out of scope while C is an assumption that needs to be considered. Hope this helps!

IMO C

A. Whether the number of dog owners remained constant over the last 3 years.
Good option , if the number of dog owners went down then the number of such cases may go down as well, but what if the number of pet owners go down but number of pets go up? then this would not stand.
B. Whether town adjoining pupper town have experienced a similar decrease.
The cases in adjoining pupper town are irrelevant.
C. Whether with an increased availability of dog-safety kits, more and more pet owners have opted to treat their pets at home to reduce wastage of time transporting the pet to a veterinary clinic.
If this isture then we have clear understanding why the number of cases went down, best option.
D. Whether the cost of insuring a dog has come down over the last three years.
Insurance is not relevant becaue its never discussed in the original argument.
E. Whether the amount of chocolate sold in Pupper Town decreased over the last 3 years.

chocolate is sold for both humans and for dogs we will not be able to differetiate.

Based on the reduction of veterinary runs, it has been concluded that dog owners are feeding less chocolates to dogs.We have to evaluate this, we have to rule out any other reason this could be happening.

A. Not a strong enough reason, even if dog owners reduced does NOT mean dogs reduced as one dog owner could have many dogs. INCORRECT.

B.Results of adjoining town is too wide and not helpful in evaluating the conclusion.INCORRECT.

C. If this is in the affirmative then we can say that the conclusion is false i.e. Dog owners have NOT reduced giving chocolates to their dogs, only that Dogs are being treated at home.CORRECT.

D. People love their dogs even if cost of insurance has come down doesn't mean dog owners could not bother to rush their dogs to the veterinary and let them die, because owners have insured their dogs because of low insurance cost.Doesn't help.INCORRECT.

E. Reduction in chocolate sales does not necessarily mean reduction in chocolate consumption by dogs, unless chocolates have become so scarce that only one or two chocolates are available in the town. Since nothing of that sort is mentioned. Option C is a stronger reason for the reduction in veterinary visits.INCORRECT.

Ans- C

Hope it's clear.

Number of cases has reduced in the town

Option A is incorrect
Explanation: Say previously the number of dog owners were 100 and of them 50 used to feed choco to their dogs.
Scenario 1: Number of dog owners has been constant for last 3 years ==> still 50 of them feed choco to their dogs.
Scenario 2: Number of dog owners has reduced in the last 3 years to 70 ==> still 50 of them feed choco to their dogs and few of them don't take their dogs to the vet. So, the number of people feeding choco to their dogs has not reduced.
Scenario 3: Number of dog owners has increased in the last 3 years to 120 ==> still 50 of them feed choco to their dogs and few of them don't take their dogs to the vet. So, the number of people feeding choco to their dogs has not reduced.
So, negation of the assumption doesn't break the conclusion.

Option C is correct
Whether with an increased availability of dog-safety kits, more and more pet owners have opted to treat their pets at home to reduce wastage of time transporting the pet to a veterinary clinic.
Scenario 1: availability of dog-safety kits has increased, so fewer people are taking their dogs to the vets and rest are treating them at home, so the number of people feeding choco to their dogs hasn't reduced.
Scenario 2: dog-safety kits are not easily available and fewer people are taking their dogs to the vets, treatment at home is low, thus the number of people feeding choco to their dogs has reduced.
Negating option C gives different answers
Hence, option C is correct

I am not sure about the quality of this question.

We have to evaluate - Whether pet owners in this place must have become more aware of the fact that chocolate must not be fed to dogs.

None of the options helps evaluate this.

Option C only helps us with "why the vet visits" might have gone down.
