Hi,

I'm 38 y.o. I scored 450 on the mock test provided by mbacom without preparation. Detailed results are: Q 33, V 19. I am not so much concerned about verbal because I didn't answer the questions thoroughly, because my main concern was Quantitative part and was rather in hurry to find out its result. Do you guys think it's possible to reach Q51 in 6 month given that I am pretty old for taking GMAT? I am planning to spend 2 hours a day for the next 6 months or so and enter the exam on December or maybe on January.
Thanks

Actually, I do suggest you to take the full test seriously when you take it. There are only 6 official tests and there are none like the official ones.
Now that said, yes! You can score a Q51 in 6 months if you have the aptitude to do so. GMAT QUANT is mostly strike based. If the right solution strikes you within seconds, you'll get the question right the right way. V19 is a matter of concern as welL

You are not too old to get a Q51, I do have to say a bit older for an MBA though. I have spoken candidly to the ADCOM of some B-schools, names shall stay confidential. They said that the employers look for fresh ones.

If you want to do EMBA, there is an executive assessment available too. Do let me know if I can be of more help. You know how to reach out :)

Hi, thank you for your response. I just wanted to find out how worse my math skills got as I hadn't opened a math book in years and therefore went for the mock test without preparation intentionally. As for Verbal part, well I am not a native speaker, neither do I have a high score on IELTS (7.0/9.0), but I think it's mostly down to reading very complicated articles, newspapers and etc. I will be sharing some part of my study for improving verbal for sure, but as I said already, my main focus is gonna be Q.

You are right, I am a bit old for MBA, but not that old for Masters in specific areas ;) I am thinking of studying Sports Management in a couple of years.

It is definitely possible to achieve Q51 in 6 month provided condition one must go through the concept ,the related application and the reasoning skills along with mastering the test taking strategy..
Of course to get the current ability , It is better to take a full length mock including awa. However , 450 is not a bad score to start with .
Thanks for your encouragement. I kept the second mock for the next attempt, with proper preparation this time, with reviewing my previous mock and I will take the verbal part more serious.

Agreed, Sports management is not the competitive to get into if you target a broad range of schools.

This is my guide to Verbal strategy
I keep attaching the necessary links to specific strategy. Currently, I have pasted the reading strategy.
For your target score, look at the class profile and then target the score, may be you won't even need a Q51, a Q49 can do the trick with a V35 at times. I understand that the GMAT is a tough journey. If you need someone to talk to, you can connect me using the contact us button on the website in signature, I don't charge currently so that is an added benefit and we can discuss your plans for the prep.
I suppose the materials you use, the sources you get referred to play an important role in getting a 700+.

Hi ForzaInter,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. You ask a great question, but I think you also need to ask whether you truly need to score Q51 on your GMAT. My guess is that even if you score around Q48+ (along with a nice verbal score) you’ll be a competitive applicant. In any case, do you want some general advice on how to improve your GMAT quant skills? Lastly, you may find it helpful to read the following article:

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your response.
I would be happy to score 48 on quant, but if I set the bar at 48, then I will score 45 ;) Maybe it's childish of me, but I really want to get 51, maybe it will positively affect my self esteem lol

I appreciate your and others' support. I am gonna look at all the links you guys have suggested and then if I need further advices I will come back for sure.

Hi ForzaInter,

Many Test Takers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That 450 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam.

While it's understandable that you might want a Q51 (since that's the highest possible Score in the Quant section), it's not clear whether you actually "need" to earn that type of Score or not. By extension, you might end up spending far too much time trying to hone all of the skills needed to score that high and not put enough effort into your Verbal studies. From your posts, it's not clear which Schools you are interested in (or might be interested in in the future), but if you're planning to apply to any highly-competitive Programs, then you will almost certainly need a strong OVERALL Score - meaning that you'll need to perform at a high level in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. Thankfully, you appear to have given yourself lots of potential study time - which is great!

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeframe and your goals:

1) What study materials do you currently have access to?
2) What is your overall goal score?
3) Have you given any though yet to which Schools you might want to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Dedicate 4 hours a day. Do all questions of quant review 2021 and the quant parts of og2021.

Test again afterwards. If your Quant is still low, buy second-hand manhattan guides that cover quant topics individually.

Test again afterward. It should raise your Quant score astronomically. However, Q51 is, frankly speaking, in different league. Only 4% of the test takers is able to achieve it.
