Congratulations on your score and thanks for your story. Can you brief a bit on how much time you spent each week and when did you do practice questions - times or untimed?

Hey anbknaga,

thanks and happy to help!

Since I had a lot of time at my disposal and being a self-learner by nature, I was able to experiment with the plethora of resources available out there. Apart from the resources I mentioned, I did a lot of googling and watched many videos on Youtube. I believe this is where test prep companies come into picture, especially if one has limited time in hand. By the way, I generally spent 2-2.5 hours daily on weekdays and 8-10 hours on weekends.

Coming to the practice questions... Initially, when I was building concepts, it was untimed. If you use wiley online question bank, which comes when you purchase OG, it also has a study mode. Whenever I could not find suitable official explanation, I searched for the same in this forum. Later on, I did mostly timed practice only. My strategy was a bit different. Most people believe generally a Quant question should be solved in an average 2 minutes. But I felt if the question is easy or sub-600, why should I take more than 1 minute, 30 secs? On hard questions, I was okay going a bit beyond 2 mins to solve.

Congratulations, Bhavesh! That is a great score!

BhaveshGMAT
Hello everyone!

I took the online GMAT day before i.e. on 6th and received my scores today early morning. Received my scores in less than 40 hours post completion of exam. That was quick! I have read a few instances on this forum wherein the scores were not received even after seven business days as promised by GMAC.

My Online Experience

Though I read quite a few not so good reviews of the online test, my experience was pretty awesome. The proctor just interacted me before the exam(voice chat), asked if I have any clarification and that's all. I faced no trouble whatsoever. Once I required to chat with the proctor on completion of verbal section. Actually, I wanted to ask if I may leave for break. The response I got was that my request for help has been communicated to the proctor. But then I just got up from my seat (offcourse after showing the clean whiteboard) and took the break. As it turned out, the proctor did not bother to reply through the end of the exam. Also, for those who wish to know how to set up your room for online exam, this is one of the best articles I came across... https://e-gmat.com/blogs/tips-and-check ... line-exam/

My GMAT Journey

I have been long out of school. I started preparing in early April through arbitrary resources available in the open source. I scored a 550 on my first official mock. I did a lot of experimentation and note-taking. The COVID lockdown and quarantine later on view travel helped me a lot. Towards the end of May, I came across this great forum. Earlier, I was wary using the forum. GMAT Club has been a boon to me. I attribute a lot of my success to it. I also used following resources:

1. Main, Quant and Verbal OG 2020 guides with extensive usage of Wiley online question bank. Best ROI I believe.

2. CR Bible - I loved the way it broke down a dozen Question types, bringing out the subtle differences.

3. GMATNinja SC videos on youtube (most of them) and a couple on RC and CR - Charles you and your sense of humour are amazing. I liked your advice alongwith other experts that verbal Question are tough to create and it's better to stick to OG as far as verbal is concerned. daagh was also a great help.

4. GMAT Club Quant Mocks - I availed these tests with the GC Points I accumulated (though i was not aware till the very end that such an option is also available - thanks bb and @bunuel). I took a total of 08 GC quant mocks and scored ranging from Q44 to Q49. The GC Quant mocks are one of the best and are strongly recommended. I did not find the verbal mocks to be good though and just gave one verbal mock disinterested.

5. Veritas Prep Mocks - I bought them at an offer price of $19. Again, a great ROI. Veritas Mocks are closest to Official Mocks, I believe. Both verbal and quant Questions are good. The questions really reflect Veritas thrust on 'higher order thinking'. I scored between 650 to 690 in the mocks.

6. Official Mock # 3 & 4 - purchased for 50$. My prep ended with score of 710 in the GMAT prep mocks. I had given a good 4+ months preparing and it seemed I have peaked out with my self-prep. Therefore, I decided to give exam 3 days after this final practice test.

Also, thanks to VeritasKarishma and Bunuel for their great explanations.

Quant Strategy

I always loved Quant and knew I will score good. I took notes and developed concepts from GC Math book and other freely available resources. I just focussed on OG Question bank. Later, focussing on missed questions on all my mocks and keeping track of them. I realised that even a sub-600 level Question on GMAT is tricky and not direct. I was careful to such questions and kept track of all such missed questions, if any. Because such easy but trap question early in the test may make or mar the Quant Score. I really love DS questions. Never before have I solved such type of questions. It required a lot of learning and unlearning. Anyone struggling with Inequalities and Absolute Value should watch Aditya's Videos on youtube hosted by CrackVerbal. This too helped me solidify concepts related to these topics.

Verbal Strategy

I started with sub-30 score and tried to develop interest in the various question types. I kept on saying myself that verbal section of GMAT is a verbal reasoning game and I have to enjoy and excel in this game. Though I consider myself an above average reader, Verbal required a lot of hard work.

CR - I took two weeks to read CR bible ,taking notes. After that, through the end of my prep, I just focussed on OG questions and referred my notes from time to time.

SC - GMATNinja Videos, proper note-taking, error-logging and only OG Questions. VeritasPrep skillbuilder video on YouTube is also highly recommended.

RC - I improved upon RC by brute force. Just solving couple of passages on daily basis. Just reminding myself the basics - read the passage for comprehension and structure.

Test day experience

I booked the slot for 11.30 am on 6th August. My test started couple of minutes before schedule. My heart was racing fast. I just took deep breaths and calmed my nerves.

The start of Quant Section was great. 3 Questions done in under 5 minutes. Stuck on a DS question (Perhaps 7th or 8th) and just marked answer choice E after 3 mins. It seemed like an experimental question. It was a min/max problem and could not figure out the solution. I got stressed a bit and moved ahead. Next 18-20 questions went smoothly. Then, I got stuck badly. Later I checked up that I had answered incorrectly for the question. I had 5 min with 4 questions left. Guessed the last question in hurry and went for a trap answer in one of the final questions. Phew! I thought after the exam - Q50 could have been within my reach and now I might have to be satisfied with a Q49. Yes, Q49 it is!

Next up was Verbal. Here, my practice played a huge role. I had given quite a few mocks with no break in between Quant and Verbal to simulate the actual test-taking experience. Later, I realised that the no break is actually a blessing in disguise. Because as soon as the Quant section was over, I just could not afford ruminating on how did I perform (which I did after the exam was over). Back to Verbal! I had read a few reviews wherein the test-takers received 2 passages right off the bat. I was happy that all the question types were evenly interspersed and that made my pacing an easy job. I was elated when I got two Bold Face CR question - perhaps a sign of doing well. I semi-guessed on the last passage, reading only half of the passage. Overall, I thought this might well be the best Verbal section I had since the start of the prep. I had got a max V37 on a Veritas Mock and on the actual test V38.

IR- the initial question was an horror. It was a multi-source reasoning type. I spent 4 minutes reading and note-taking.. understood somewhat and saw the clock ticking.. I cutoff and jumped straight to the question. Upon realising that there were a total of 3 questions, I then thought I should have actually spent one extra minute analysing the details in the questions. I recouped my losses later and thought will somehow settle for a respectable score. I got a 5 on IR.

Final thoughts

I am happy for a 710 on first attempt with cost-effective self-prep. The GMAT has been a enriching journey of past 4+ months. I knew towards the end of my prep that whatever be the result, I have learnt a lot. As they say, "Focus on the Play and the Game takes care of itself." Now, as I contemplate on my GMAT journey and the result, I am planning to give one more shot at the GMAT, with a plan to boost my score by 30+ points. Only I wish GMAC provides the option to avail ESR. Any thoughts/strategy on retaking strategy by the experts or retakers would be helpful. I am planning to join B-school not before 2022. A big thanks to the forum and its moderators!
