MAGNET: Total letters '6'

Atleast 4 letters: 4 letters + 5 letters + 6 letters [repetition not allowed]

4 letters password: _ _ _ _: 1st space has 6 choices, 2nd space has 5 choices, and so on: 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 = 360

5 letters password: _ _ _ _: 1st space has 6 choices, 2nd space has 5 choices, and so on: 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 = 720

6 letters password: _ _ _ _: 1st space has 6 choices, 2nd space has 5 choices, and so on: 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 720

Total: 360 + 720 + 720 = 1800

Requirement:
To create password using the word MAGNET

Restrictions:
Password must have atleast 4 letters
No repeated letters allowed

Solution
Since password must have atleast 4 letters, the possible lengths are 4, 5 and 6

Lets use permutation in this case. The formula to calculate permutation is \(\frac{n! }{ (n-r)!}\)

The number of possibilities for a 4 letter password is \(\frac{6! }{ (6-4)!}\) = 360
The number of possibilities for a 5 letter password is \(\frac{6! }{ (6-5)!}\) = 720
The number of possibilities for a 6 letter password is \(\frac{6! }{ (6-6)!}\) = 720

Total combination is 360+720+720 = 1800

A. 360

B. 720

C. 1080

D. 1440

E. 1800

Solution:

The number of 4-, 5-, and 6-letter passwords that can be formed using the word MAGNET (with no letters repeated) are 6P4, 6P5 and 6P6, respectively. Therefore, the total number of different passwords that can be formed is:

6P4 + 6P5 + 6P6 = (6 x 5 x 4 x 3) + (6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2) + 6! = 360 + 720 + 720 = 1800
