They are interested but clearly concerned about your GRÉ and might be letting you know if waitlisted, this is the issue. Or, they plan to make a conditional admit and need to know if they can count you in.

I quite resonate with you there: holistically a good profile but a little lower than average GMAT. I too was asked by my interviewer that if the admissions committee asks will I retake GMAT. I replied yes and also gave him some colour on why my score was lower. However you should note that GMAT or GRE ultimately is a measure of your ability to handle the rigour of the course work. If in your application, through your GPA, Academics background or Professional experience you have demonstrated the ability to handle highly quant/analytical focused course, they might not scrutinize the GMAT/GRE score too much but rather evaluate in conjunction with these parameters.
Also, just want to ask the folks out here if you know anyone who had received request from Adcom for retaking the GRE/GMAT previously and at what stage they were asked to retake it?
