Hi Priyam, The stand out part of the profile is your experience towards product side while working in a PSU bank. This unique experience of handling product while bringing strong banking domain knowledge will put you in best of the positions to grab good roles in fintech if you want to go in those roles. In short, your post MBA employ-ability is will be the big bonus for you. Other than that, rest of the profile is just like most of the other candidates, good but not stand out profile. In fact 90% plus of the batch in any college is just normal profile and they are equally if not more successful in grabbing admissions and placements. Bottomline is that profiles really dont matter that much in reality in comparison to how much they matter here in GMAT club! Prepare well for your interviews and essays. Understand what are the good things you can highlight and portray them in impactful manner while writing as well as speaking. If you do this properly with a decent score, you will qualify. In our experience, PSU banking candidates were in good demand last year and they qualified with lower than average scores as well. This may or may not repeat this year. But just FYI.
Thankyou so much for the information.

Hello Ankit_Raturi

I hope you are doing well. It looks like you have a strong profile for the ISB MBA program. Your academic achievements, work experience, and extracurricular activities are notable. You have an excellent 10th CGPA and 12th percentage with a respectable 8/10 CGPA in your B.B.A. LL.B. program.

Speaking about your work experience, two years of work experience as a Legal Manager at Kotak Mahindra Bank in Wholesale Banking could provide you with unique insights into the business world.

Coming to your ECs, freelance writing and Moot Court participation demonstrate your communication skills and interest in law, while a contract drafting certificate adds to your legal expertise. Your goal of transitioning into consulting or general management aligns well with the MBA program's objectives.

Your profile appears competitive for the ISB MBA program. However, keep in mind that admissions are competitive and the final decision is influenced by various factors, including the applicant pool for a particular year.

For the GMAT score required for Round 2 selection, ISB's average GMAT score tends to be around 710-720. However, it's important to note that GMAT is just one aspect of the application. A strong overall application, including essays, letters of recommendation, and interviews, can compensate for a slightly lower GMAT score.

As for scholarships, ISB offers several merit-based scholarships. The criteria for these scholarships can vary, but they typically take into account a combination of academic excellence, work experience, leadership potential, and contribution to the community. Given your strong profile, you could be a competitive candidate for these scholarships. Remember to put together a compelling application that showcases your strengths, experiences, and future goals.

Good luck with your MBA application journey!

Hello PRIYAM01,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile looks good on the surface. Your Xth and XIIth grades are quite good, demonstrating strong academic foundations. Your graduation percentage in Civil Engineering is slightly lower, but your strong performance in Xth and XIIth might help balance it out. Participation in sports and extracurricular activities adds a well-rounded dimension to your profile.

Speaking about your work experience, you have a diverse background with experience in both business development and banking. Although the initial 1-month roles at Byju's and Policy Bazaar are short, they indicate your interest in business development. Your 5-year tenure at a PSU bank showcases stability and growth in the banking sector. Starting as a credit analyst and advancing to handling product growth and strategy at the regional and corporate levels demonstrates your career progression. Managing a branch and dealing with micro-enterprises and retail customers highlights your hands-on experience.

Transitioning from a PSU to the private sector shows adaptability and a desire for growth and new challenges. Overall, your profile has strengths in terms of academics, work experience, and career progression. However, there are areas that could be improved, such as your graduation percentage. Your work experience in the private sector (Byju's, Policy Bazaar) is quite short, but your significant tenure at the PSU bank compensates for this and showcases your ability to grow within an organization.

For the ISB MBA program, the admissions committee looks for well-rounded individuals with strong academic and professional backgrounds, leadership potential, and a clear articulation of goals. Make sure to emphasize your achievements, leadership roles, and your journey from a PSU to the private sector, as this narrative can add depth to your application.

Regarding your query about GMAT, while you haven't provided a specific score, a competitive GMAT score for ISB usually falls in the range of 680-750. However, remember that GMAT is just one part of the application. A holistic and compelling application, along with strong essays, recommendations, and interviews, can significantly impact your chances of admission.

Good luck with your MBA application!

Hello shades28,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile is quite impressive and showcases a strong commitment to both professional growth and social impact. You have an excellent academic record in 10th and 12th grades with a solid UG GPA of 8.79 in Civil Engineering from SRM University.

Your work experience reflects diverse roles and responsibilities across different industries, demonstrating adaptability and a willingness to take on challenges. Working at a Sports Analytical Startup and interacting with well-known teams like Mumbai Indians and the West Indies National Team adds a unique experience. Mentoring underprivileged children and contributing to their development through sports shows your commitment to social impact. Data analysis roles at consulting firms and cybersecurity firms indicate your quantitative skills and analytical thinking. Managing a portfolio of $7M and handling Pre-Sales and Customer Success responsibilities showcase your business acumen.

Coming to your ECs, your involvement with NGOs and teaching underprivileged children, as well as your role as a football coach and curriculum manager, highlight your dedication to community service and education. Leading the launch of a volunteering platform in association with the World Economic Forum demonstrates your leadership and ability to drive initiatives.

While your GRE score is on the lower side, your experience and achievements can potentially compensate for this, especially considering your strong quantitative score (167Q). Your profile is well-rounded and showcases a mix of academic excellence, work experience, leadership, and social impact. For the ISB MBA program and IIM-A PGPX, your unique experiences and diverse background can be assets. The admissions committees at both schools tend to value well-rounded profiles with leadership, impact, and a clear trajectory. To address the concern about your GRE score, you might consider addressing it in your application. Explain why you believe your experiences and skills make up for the quantitative score and how you've demonstrated quantitative aptitude in your professional roles.

Overall, you have a compelling profile, and with strong application essays, letters of recommendation, and interview performance, you could present a very competitive application.

Good luck with your applications!

Hi Ankit_Raturi

Your profile has many positive things to offer, especially your business education and legal background.
A unique blend of legal expertise and business acumen can be of great value in a variety of industries and leadership positions. Through your work experience, you may have had ample opportunity to become familiar with corporate legal matters, which enhances your understanding of the regulatory and compliance aspects of business management. If you tap into your learnings well, you can be a great match for ISB. As a less experienced applicant, unpack your experiences and build your narratives in a way that makes it clear that over the 2 years, you have gained much more hands-on experience, had the opportunity to work closely with executives, gained more experiential maturity, and have been better able to contextualize business issues (specifically in your field of work). Showcase a well thought out goal plan that takes into account your short-term goals in consulting, but also what you want to achieve in the long term (ambitious, but also motivating).

Target a 730+ if possible.

Personalized advice tailored to your specific situation is just a phone call or message away. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process. We do not cap our discussion ours for our applicants

shades28 Your profile stands out among a huge pool of data and business analysts. The potential you have to gain deep insights from your experiences is undeniable.

Your academic record shows a commendable trajectory. Even though your GRE result is a mixed bag, the 167 score is undoubtedly a major plus. If I were a member of the admissions committee and I was interested in your profile, the interview would be the defining moment. Your ability to separate your vocabulary knowledge from your true character and interpersonal skills would be key. Therefore, intensive preparation for interviews at ISB and IIM A is advisable.

I observe promising growth, fascinating professional development, and high risk-taking abilities (willingness to try new things) throughout your career. Take time to reflect on the reasons for each major career decision and the valuable lessons you have learned from difficult ventures.

Please read my write up on how to navigate a lay off before MBA application-

PLEASE EVALUATE

PRIYAM01

I would consider you a great fit for IIM A and B. ISB can also be a good option.

Growth Progression

With 6+ years of experience and a differentiated background in PSU, (Finance throughout I think), things appear promising at first glance. However, the most crucial aspect to showcase in a B School application/interview is "career progression." How have you demonstrated an upward trajectory in the last 6 years? What new learnings and incremental responsibilities have you acquired due to your capabilities? What was your rational behind each career decision. Unpack your experiences and construct your stories in a way that demonstrates how working on your projects has provided you with more hands-on experience, experiential maturity, and the ability to contextualize business problems within your industry. When it comes to standing out in a competitive pool of applicants, nothing works better than showing a strong industry focus.

ECs
For your extracurriculars, I suggest that you delve deeper and analyze whether you have overlooked any mundane, unobvious, or subtle initiatives you may have undertaken over the years. This could include activities such as travel, learning a new language, participating in diversity initiatives at work (such as speaking out against gender discrimination or advocating for diversity in the workforce), providing financial or moral support to those in need, teaching underprivileged children, organizing diversity talks or off-site activities to enhance collaboration among teams, and more. In my experience, I have observed that applicants often struggle to recall, in the early stages of the application, how they have contributed to the betterment of their community. It may require some introspection to uncover these experiences.

Goals Strategy
Considering your background in public sector banking/finance, here are some ideas to consider for your story as a PGP applicant. Present a compelling narrative about your motivation to work in the public sector. You may have interesting insights from working on projects that concern specific target groups (TGs, for example, such as the bottom of the pyramid in the economy). What problems did you identify and attempt to solve? Showcase compassionate leadership through stories and a determined will to mobilize specific sectors post-MBA (and how?), leveraging your prior experience in public sector banking and the increased business acumen gained from the PGP program. Be mindful of your goals. This will require further discussion and research (before you write your essays), but I believe you can leverage your diverse experience within banking to pursue a wide range of roles in advisory, consulting, tech startups, impact initiatives, and more.

Target a decent GMAT (700+)

10th - 93, sports at the state level
12 - 87
Degree - 7 Production Engineering, Govt. College

During college-
Had to re-take one exam.
Was the secretary of a club & participated, as a team, in an International competition representing college + India, came 5th internationally, 1st among Asian teams.
6 month internship at Godrej in the project management cell & handled multiple projects.

Joined a Big4 consultancy right after college. First joined in their Analytics space and took solo projects on the concept of fast fail- trying & testing strategies/ideas in their nascent stage. Worked alongside the customer’s leadership. Have dealt with international clients.
Moved to Supply Chain space over a year ago (which aligns more to my long term goals). Have been working on unique assets which deals with the entre value chain- have led the Analytics front, support towards functional and GTMs.

Need an MBA because I feel the gaps in my understanding of sectors(mostly finance, Human capital, Marketing) and influencing factors in supply chain and product life cycles, would appreciate time off for focused learning with peers from these sectors. Also want to start blending the concepts of ESG with Supply chain.

Post MBA- Back to consulting, consulting only. ESG space preferred.

Is it too mundane if I am in consulting & want to go back to consulting?

Would appreciate I get one of those reviews as well, thanks :)

kanishkakarpe hope you are doing great

Your academic arc seems alright (as long as the retake doesn't show up separately on the transcript, in which case I recommend a solid GMAT for sure). However, your GMAT situation is not clear to me.

I see good opportunities to talk about your high-impact engagements and lessons learned from consulting work. It's a good idea to put sustainable and ethical supply chains at the center of your professional motivation. The types of projects you have worked on and your deep insights into this industry after working with various clients can add an interesting layer to your ISB application.

Your aspiration to pursue an MBA and then return to consulting, at the intersection of ESB and supply chain, shows a clear focus on specialization. Returning to consulting with a focus on ESG fits well with the increasing importance of sustainability and ethics in business decision-making and contributing meaningfully to a specific area within consulting. MBA essays are about passion, they are about how ready you are to change a problem in the world or seize an opportunity that will impact positively. To address this well, your passion has to reflect through your goals narrative.

My special tip for you would be to illustrate your qualities and research on your goals with as many examples as you can cohesively add in your application or talk about in the interview. Schools would not turn down a high-potential applicant who is intimately familiar with industry trends and who (with or without an MBA) will be very successful.

Best wishes

Could someone give me a profile evaluation? I'm a 26-year-old male candidate.

Academics
10th: 90% (ICSE)
12th: 93% (ISC)
UG: 70% (BCom Hons)
GMAT: 680 (Q43, V40)

Extra curriculars
These were all during my college years. I was the member of the events team that handled an annual fest with 40+ events each year in all of my three years in college. I was active in college politics and elected as the class rep in each of the two years I stood as a candidate. I have won several accolades in writing and management events.

Work experience
I will have over six years of work ex in the sports content industry (four years in sports media, two years in sports data analytics) by end of March 2024. I have worked on and with (as direct clients) most of the top sporting leagues that you can think of (IPL, English Premier League, NBA, to name a few).

Career goals
I want to move into product and consultancy roles. In my application, I have highlighted huge similarities in the sports content industry and B2C industries (which I firmly believe to be true). In my years, I have worked on the functions of SEO, editorial planning, team management, social media, budgeting, data analysis and finally, product planning. I want to do an MBA to get a better grasp of the business side of things, which I believe would make me the complete package for the career progression plans I mentioned at the beginning.

If someone could give me an idea of b-schools that I should realistically be targeting (I will apply to all the top ones in India, of course), I would be grateful.

Additionally, I have one doubt. Of the six years of work ex I mentioned, I worked on an exclusive contract as a consultant (I could not take any other work with any other company) and not as a full-time employee. I have the necessary documents to prove the nature of the contract. Should I mention this period in my work ex or skip it?

Many thanks in advance to whoever bothers to go through this long comment and takes the time to reply.
