Please give a review of my candidature. Target schools - ISB, IIM-A PGPX Profile - Male, 26 10th - 91 12th - 89 BTech in ECE - Techno India Salt lake(affiliated to WBUT) - 8 CGPA GMAT - 730 (Q49, V41, IR 7, AWA 5) Work experience - 1. Infosys - June 2019 to April 2021 - Specialist Programmer 2. Punjab National Bank - June 2021 to present I joined as a Management Trainee(Probationary Officer). Current designation is Assistant Branch Manager. Extra curriculars - Football - I have played at district level and have won prized compeititions. Biker - Recently scaled Gurudongmar lake(altitude of 17300 ft) on my bike. Community experience - Multiple community outreach programmes in rural areas as part of PNB. I have mentored students currently preparing for government exams. CSR activities with Infosys. Few things to consider - 1. My GMAT score is 1 year old (I took it in August 2022). Should I go for a retake? 2. ISB R1 deadline is Sept 10. Should I apply in R1 or should I apply in R2, given that I have not started my application? Please advise whether I have a shot at my target colleges or should I target lower ranked MBA programs? I want to take up admission consulting services so if any consultant will help me, it’d be great. Thanks in advance.
Hi Messifan,

Your GMAT score is good and competitive. The work ex in PNB will be really valued as there has been good demand of candidates with banking background in last few years. The district level football will be appreciated by the college.

Coming to your questions -
1. My GMAT score is 1 year old (I took it in August 2022). Should I go for a retake?
No, retake doesnt make sense. The score is valid and more than enough.

2. ISB R1 deadline is Sept 10. Should I apply in R1 or should I apply in R2, given that I have not started my application?
If you have not started, then go for R2. Unless, you are really devoted to spend good amount of time.

Please advise whether I have a shot at my target colleges or should I target lower ranked MBA programs?
Both colleges are within your reach if properly applied.

I want to take up admission consulting services so if any consultant will help me, it’d be great.
Check us out by searching "psutoprivate" on google.

Hope it helped.

Messifan2767 hope you are doing well

You should apply when you feel most prepared.
As of now, your GMAT score is good and valid.

Your thought process and rationale behind moving from IT to banking must be addressed well. Explain the factors that led you to make this switch, whether it was a fascination with finance or banking, a desire to work more closely with clients, or a desire to contribute to the growth of the financial sector. Describe the steps you took to make this change possible. Explain any relevant courses, certifications, or additional training you have completed to bridge the knowledge gap between IT and banking. Show a go getter attitude. Describe any experiences you have had, such as internships, projects, or networking opportunities that gave you insight into the banking industry and reinforced your decision.

Highlight qualities such as analytical skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and technological knowledge that have benefited you in your new field. This not only highlights your adaptability and determination but also demonstrates your potential to succeed in your chosen field.

You did not mention your goals. It is important to craft a solid goals plan as ISB and IIM A are schools that expect applicants to have a clear plan for their future, at least for the immediate future. Avoid presenting a generic profile with overused post-MBA goal statements. Think about your long-term vision and set ambitious and inspiring goals that make your short-term trajectory plausible.

To show that you have thoroughly thought through your goals, outline your comprehensive plan for the future in your essay and interviews. Establish both a Plan A and a Plan B and corroborate both plans with relevant insights gleaned from your contacts with alumni, potential recruiters, and industry experts.

Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process.

Guys, any idea about the number of days that GMAC takes to send the official score of GMAT- Online? There are some who got the report within 3 days, and some with 3 weeks. How much time does it generally take?

Dear Pulkitr7,

Below is my evaluation of your profile.

GRE: Average as far ISB & IIM B is concerned, slightly below par as far as IIM A is concerned.
Academics: Above Average; good GPA and a tier 2 college will work well with adcoms

Work Experience: At first glance, your experience seems to be from the Over Represented pool of applicants applying with Data Science background. You can make your case stronger by talking about specific projects / specific industries you were part of and how you were able to create an impact. Do make sure that the focus should be less on your technical skills and more on your Soft Skills and Industry understanding.

Extra-Curriculars: <Can’t comment due to lack of information provided>
Goals: You need to be specific about your short term career goals and hence state either PM OR Management Consultant and NOT both

To answer your queries,
1. Which Areas to focus for “Interviews” – I am assuming you are referring to IIM B’s interview only since ISB’s R1 is still due and IIM A’s shortlist is yet to come. For interviews as well as application, you should focus on how you intend to add value to the cohort based on your experience and personality traits. Since a lot of applicants apply with prior Data Analytics background (ZS, Accenture, BCN, AbsolutData, Dunhumby, L&T, Major IT Service players etc), it will be important for you to succinctly highlight your USP and how you are a cultural, professional and academic fit to the cohort. Additionally, you should also be able to convey in a very logical manner how your experience so far while combined with the MBA education (from the particular program) will expedite your career progression plans.

2. How to project my goals? – Apply the X+Y=Z framework, where Z: List of all soft and hard skills you need to become to succeed as a PM or Mgmt. Consultant, X: List of all soft and hard skills you currently possess, and Y is the bridge – what is lacking in you and how you believe the MBA from specific school will help you build those skills.

Note: For 1 year MBA Programs, as a rule of thumb, Y <= 50% of Z – meaning that you should come to the program with equal or more skillsets reqd. in future.

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and have been guiding applicants successfully navigate their admission journeys for the last 6 years. Feel free to reach out if you seek professional assistance.

Cheers and all the very Best !!

Hi,
I appeared for GMAT today, scored 680 despite scoring 700+ in each mock and 720 and 740 respectively in official mock. Really disappointed.

I’m a YLP candidate. Although I know that receiving a call at 680 is no less than a miracle, could you please evaluate my profile?

10- 87 percent
12- 92 percent
Grad- 9.3 overall (university topper in Sem 6 with 9.85 sgpa)
College- VIPS, GGSIPU
Course- BBA
Recently joined Accenture as operations associate

Internships- interned at several startups in roles like research, market research, investment banking, Research intern at iit Indore.

Initiatives- own a sustainability focused thrift store, 5000+ followers on insta, 300+ customers and 20+ sellers. (Side gig)
Own a men accessories brand with friends (side gig)
Founded finance society in college
VP at placement cell in college

Have also written a research paper on stock market
Part of an NGO

While I want to reflect the initiatives in my essays, I don’t know how to.

The topic is- what is the ideal career which you always wanted to pursue? Do you still want to pursue the same or has it changed? How do you plan to make your ideal career a reality?

Could someone please help?

Hello Pulkitr7

While you have covered most quantitative aspects, the information shared lacks qualitative details such as-

1. Work ex- career progression and achievements. Make sure you impress the adcom with your career progress and achievements (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements, the impact you had on the business of your company).
2. Diversity- extracurricular activities or any traits that can help you stand out in the competition. Talk about how are you planning to you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
3. Career Goals- clarity- PM and MC are two very distinct fields and you will need to showcase to the adcom your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon. This should make for a comprehensive narrative.

Hello Messifan2767

You have a decent profile.
Past scores are decent and GMAT is above average for the schools on your list.
Work ex shows potential for story telling and adds diversity to your profile. Make sure you impress the adcom with your career progress and achievements (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements, the impact you had on the business of your company).
Diversity is further helped by your strong extracurricular activities and community experience. In your essays talk about how these activities will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
The key element missing in your profile is a mention of career goals. Your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as is your past experience/scores. Talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon. This should make for a comprehensive narrative.

You do not need to retake the GMAT, it is valid for 5 years. If you have not started the application and do not have answers to the points I have raised above (especially career goals), I would recommend to apply in R2. You have a good profile, if you can tell a good story around your past work ex and tie them with a clear and organic set of career goals, you have a decent shot at ISB/IIMA.

Hello Satyaraj

Excellent GMAT.
But that is all I can say with the limited information you have shared.
I will recommend to visit this forum and see what information your competition is sharing in terms of profile, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
No mention of career progression or achievements at work.
No extracurricular activities or anything that can help you add diversity and stand out in the largest and most competitive pool of IT applicants. How are you planning to add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
No career goals. Talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon.
Since you have not mentioned these, I would assume that you are not aware how important these are for a successful application.

Hello AK24

Except for the GMAT score, pretty balanced profile in terms of Work Ex (decent career progression, and above all good potential of story telling), Diversity (your work ex add this anyway, extracurricular activities and certifications help further) and Career Goals (while you have a direction in mind, I would recommend getting more specific from here- talk about your long term goals and your personal drive/motivation behind these goals, the short term goals immediately post MBA, what roles and companies you wish to target and how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve those goals- what new skills will it add, what existing skills will it build upon).
A GMAT of 710+ will take you places (also to help that average graduation score). Higher the better.

Hello Jitesh8

A retake on the GMAT is of course highly recommended. Due to your merchant navy background you could get in with a below average score, but 610 is just too risky.
Like most merchant navy background profiles, your work ex will have to be your strength. Make sure you impress the adcom with your career progress and achievements (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements, the impact you had on the business of your company).
Let us now move to your question on extracurricular activities. Let us understand why are these important and why are schools interested in these. Schools want to see that how will you add diversity to the batch. More than a laundry list of activities the focus should be in proving how your experience in these activities will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom. In your case diversity is high due to the merchant navy background but extracurricular can help further. The key is similar to work ex- talk about impact and accomplishments here.
Lastly, career goals are missing.

Hello Mih2503

Let us dissect the profile into its basic elements-

1. Academics- Past scores are decent, I would recommend a 710+ to stay above the average of the class and stand out in the large and competitive pool of engineering applicants.
2. Work Ex- Your work profile is interesting, if you can show via your stories that you have had a positive measurable impact on the your company, clients and teams, you can show a future potential leader to the adcom. Talk about your career progression and achievements at work (keep in mind that awards and promotions are not achievements, they are the results of your achievements)
3. Diversity- In addition, some of your extracurricular activities/initiatives are interesting and that should help you stand out. The trick is again to show accomplishments and impact here.
4. Career Goals- What is missing in your profile is a mention of career goals.

If you work on all the four points above, you have a profile worth a decent shot.

Hello AbhinavSparsh

Your GMAT is slightly below the average of the class.
But that is all I can say with the limited information you have shared.
I will recommend to visit this forum and see what information your competition is sharing in terms of profile, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
No mention of career progression or achievements at work.
No extracurricular activities or anything that can help you add diversity and stand out in a competitive pool of applicants.
