IMO A. The giveaway here was the second clause, but the first part is more ambiguous.

A - 'traveled repeatedly... to unite the Native American tribes' flows well and makes sense, and 'himself a reformed alcoholic' fits grammatically with the fewest words

B - 'traveled repeatedly so as to unite' introduces some clunky and unnecessary prepositions

C - 'for uniting' is longer, less direct, and clunkier than 'to unite'

D - 'so as to be the uniter' - again, extremely clunky and we don't know he was the only one

E - 'for the uniting of' - this is awkward and makes it sound like the uniting was an event rather than a cultural movement that grew through his work over time
