Why not from West to East?

er_suraj Good question, there is a reading trap here, we must be very careful!

The stem says, "and among those vehicles entering the intersection from THAT direction...".

So, the two answer choices are interconnected; "THAT direction" refers to the answer for the first blank, "south".

Therefore, for the second blank, we are only looking at the three rows for "entered from SOUTH".

Here's a video solution for blank 2, it's only 27 seconds long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ytmdBCyPl0&t=36s

Does that help? Please let me know if you have any further questions, thanks!

GMATCoachBen "south to north" no of vehicles bar seems a little bit shorter than the "west to east" bar. Shouldn't the answer be west to east instead ?
Especially if you expand the visual you can clearly see the west to east bar is longer.

So, even for the first blank we should consider the "entered the intersection" as a separate part and seek for which of the four groups has the most (in number) long bars and since south has all 3 whereas north has 2, we choose south. And then for the second one we essentially do the same but only for those entered from south.

During the hour, the greatest number of vehicles entered the intersection from the [south], and among those vehicles entering the intersection from that direction, the greatest number of vehicles exited the intersection to the [north]

1. The greatest number of vehicles entered the intersection from the [south]

It can easily be seen that all three bars with "Entered from" South are among the top highest

2. Among those vehicles entering the intersection from that direction, the greatest number of vehicles exited the intersection to the [north]

Among those 3 bars with "Entered from" South, that "Exited to" North is the longest

You are just checking one bar ...consider all the bars from each category...The total will be highest for the "South"..Hope it helps.

It is very important to remember one thing "Most of the DI questions have language traps" so be very careful.

In this graph, there is no way to tell how many vehicles entered and exited but we have #s in combination. Hence, noticing this and then reading the question "greatest number of vehicles entering.... " it would definitely be south and then most vehicles exit from North.

So, South and north it is.
