I met representatives from colleges in UK last year. They seem to have issues when someone applies for a additional MBA. Hope it won't be a issue for you, all the very best

Thanks for your comments and feedback, Arvind.

Ps - I do not have international work experience.
I have been engaged in volunteering activities over the years, but nothing too recently.

Hi,

Request for some guidance on my chances of admission to a 1 year MBA program in UK, Singapore

Profile:
Indian Female
Undergrad: BA Economics from DU; GPA - Second division
Also have a Masters in International Business from a UK university - performed better here with Distinction (71%)

Work Experience of ~7 years:
Pre-Masters: 2 years at Big 4 company
Post-Masters: 2 years in Advisory/Consulting at Big 4
Then shifted to the pharmaceuticals industry - working directly with the Global Head of a business division - 3 years in this position
I'm currently unemployed (4 months) due to relocation.

GMAT Score: 690 [Q49/V35]

My professional experience has been in strategy support, market intelligence and business reporting, I would like to pursue an MBA to transition to senior managerial positions in Corporate Strategy/ Business Planning/ Marketing, preferably in life sciences or manufacturing sectors.

I'm considering applying to R3 deadlines of the following B-schools: Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick. Also looking at NUS & NTU in Singapore.

Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you!

Hey, Apras_21
Thank you for your post!

I'd be delighted to offer some guidance on your journey towards pursuing an MBA. Firstly, your profile is quite remarkable and certainly brings a lot to the table, but like any application, it has its strengths and areas where you might need to brace for challenges.

Strengths:

Diverse Educational Background: Your transition from a BA in Economics to a Master's in International Business, especially with a distinction in the latter, showcases your academic capacity, which is a strong point. Moreover, having around seven years of experience with notable stints in both the consulting sector and the pharmaceutical industry is impressive, and you must highlight your stint where you worked directly under the Global Head; this experience is invaluable, and try to add as many things you learned as possible, particularly as you aim to pivot to senior managerial roles.

Add more value to your International Exposure as it makes you a good fit for business schools looking to diversify their student body.

Career Goals: You have a clear vision for your future, aiming to transition into senior managerial positions. This clarity will help you craft compelling essays that resonate with the admissions committees.

Areas of Concern:

Undergraduate GPA: Your undergraduate GPA might be lower than the typical profile of admitted students. However, your improved performance in your master's program and adding any accolades from extra-curricular activity, interesting courses, or skill set acquired during your undergrad day can be a redeeming factor, demonstrating your ability to excel academically.

Employment Gap: There is no need to particularly highlight your break as a "4-month unemployment gap" Also, someone so qualified being unemployed due to relocation could raise questions. It's crucial to address this in your application by adding a bit more to it and framing it as a period of strategic career transition or personal growth.

GMAT Score: While a 690 is a strong score for someone trying for R3 and of Indian background, it will be tough to crack since the average for schools like Oxford and Cambridge is around 700+. For Singapore, your GMAT score will do so; making sure the rest of your application is robust will be key to making your GMAT score work in your favor.

Advice for Application:

Highlight Growth and Leadership: In your essays, emphasize the growth you've experienced through your diverse roles and the leadership qualities you've developed. Share specific examples where you've made a significant impact. Secondly, address the GPA and Employment Gap and be upfront about it, focusing on your progression and the proactive steps you're taking toward your career goals.

Research and Tailor Your Applications: Please make sure you understand what each program offers and how it aligns with your career goals. Tailor your application to reflect this alignment with the school goals, showing the admissions committees why you're a perfect fit for their program and how you intend to contribute.

With its unique blend of experiences and academic achievements, your profile certainly positions you as a strong candidate. With a well-crafted application that addresses the areas of concern and highlights your strengths, you will stand a good chance of securing admission to these prestigious programs. Please remember that the application process is also about finding the right fit, so make sure that your chosen programs align with your career aspirations and personal values.

Good luck!

Hi Apras_21 , I have experience working with applicants with all kinds of employment gaps, so feel free to reach out if you're interested in seeking professional advice. Overall, your career trajectory seems decent. However, pursuing an MBA just two years after completing your master's may raise questions about your ability to navigate your current career effectively. It could be perceived as seeking an exit path or a solution for the employment gap. You didn't mention your current relocation. If it's a country other than the UK, especially due to sponsorship issues, it might weaken your application to UK target schools. To avoid speculation, I suggest that you have a detailed discussion with an admissions expert specializing in MBA programs.

Feel free to speak one to one for a deeper discussion
Best wishes
