Very true, I had the same idea about it, all other options got eliminated

option A is correct as it is the only one dealing with cost effectiveness of industrial material from chitin by stating no special engineering process is needed.

Looking to develop technologies that can produce cost-effective industrial material, material scientists at Lexington University are developing a new way to make bioplastics, plastic materials produced from biomass sources. The technology uses chitin, which is the tough, fibrous substance that forms the exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans. First, the chitin is harvested and subject to deacetylation, and then worked into stiff sheets with the same structure as natural chitin shells. Its chitinous structure renders the material durable and versatile, making it easy to work with and lowering the cost of using it in manufacturing.

Which of the following considerations would, if true, most strongly support the hypothesis that the plan, if implemented, will produce cost-effective industrial material from chitin?

A. Because chitin is naturally-occurring, no special engineering process is needed to produce the basic fibrous structure that provides the material with its durability and versatility.
B. The current cost of bioplastics is roughly five times that of standard plastics.
C. Chitin is an important element in the food chain and helps regulate the chemical composition of marine environments.
D. Bioplastics are somewhat more heat resistant than previous types of plastics.
E. The production of bioplastics primarily uses eco-friendly materials.

The passage speaks about technologies used to develop cost effective industrial material. But, Lexington universities, have developed bio plastics - materials developed from biomass sources.

They use Chitin - the exoskeletons derived from insects and crustaceans. After processing, the material is durable and versatile, making it easier to work with, as well as lowers costs.

This directly supports the hypothesis that the plan if implemented could be cost effective. Since, it’s naturally occurring, with no special engineering process needed to achieve the durability and versatility. This chitin remains a favourable choice for cost effective industrial materials. Hence, correct answer.

B. The current cost of bioplastics is roughly five times that of standard plastics.

Chitin is a bioplastics, does chitin costs more than standard plastics ? The answer is not conclusive. Hence, the option is wrong, as it doesn’t support the cost effective aspect of the plan.

C. Chitin is an important element in the food chain and helps regulate the chemical composition of marine environments.

Chitin related to food chain and its role in marine chemical composition regulation is completely out of scope. Hence, Wrong.

D. Bioplastics are somewhat more heat resistant than previous types of plastics.

Does the passage say it’s heat resistant ? No. Does this option address the cost effective nature of the product ? The answer is still a big No. Hence, the option is wrong.

E. The production of bioplastics primarily uses eco-friendly materials.

The definition of bio plastics mentions it uses biomass for generating bioplastics, and biomass is naturally eco friendly. Does this aspect covered in the passage ? Is eco friendly in any way correlated to the cost of manufacturing bio plastics ? As the answers to these questions are not supportive to the theme of the passage. Hence, wrong.

Option A
