Researchers say that: They removed algae from some reef sections. Those sections had fewer intact fish eggs. Therefore, algae helps fish reproduce by providing attachment sites and protection for eggs. To weaken we need to show that something other than the absence of algae has caused the fewer eggs.

So the researchers scrapped the algae and these sections had fewer intact eggs, researchers link that this means the algae must provide attachement sites and protective covering.

A - Fish prefer bare surfaces over algaw, which seems to cut against the conclusion, but it actually makes the result harder to explain rather than offering an alternative cause for it. Also think if fish prefer bare rock then we'd expect more eggs in scraped sections - eliminate
B - scraping causes abrasion damage to the underlying substrate. this is devastating, as it introduces a new factor that sections weren't just largely algae free they were damaged - keep

The answer is B. The argument's logic is that the algae-scraped sections had fewer intact eggs than undisturbed sections therefore algae facilitates fish reproduction. B is the correct answer because it introduces a new factor that could have impacted the number of intact eggs. the correct answer here is B

I was confused betweeen B & D, But chose B for the following reason-
In the sea/oceans, coral reefs are undisturbed. When the researcher took 20 reefs and scraped off algae and its surface got disrupted than it's natural form, obviously eggs would not stay. It would give false result.

IMO ANS is - B
So I Pre thinking another reason when we are removing algae and because of human touch some issue happened and hence fish eggs are less now on touched area.
I got similar option B so I went with this option I feel this question is comparably easier to other CR questions. Answer choice option also I eliminate easy.
A - If A is true then eggs should be more in bare beef before the research also but yes It could be one of the weakener answer choice if we says our fish / data points are not equal I haven't this before when I'm answering the question
b - Correct - I'm assumed fish are normal and then I pre think so - something happened when human removed touched the algae side so this could be the reasons less eggs sticking now.
c- this is strengthener
d - egg hatched is irrelevant here.
e - it gives extra info if algae is overgrown it may cause issue again irrelevant on this research ask weakener

In this CR, we need to weaken the researchers reasoning which says - after removing algae from the site there were fewer intact eggs as compared to those sites which still had algae present.
The researchers in their conclusion did not consider any other factor responsible for lower intact eggs present in site with no algae.

A) This option is irrelevant as it would make the results complicated and this option does not undermine researchers reasoning
B) if the process of removing algae caused damage to the site and reduces the suitability as egg laying site then we have an alternative reason to prove the lower intact eggs in sites with algae absent. - CORRECT
C) this strengthens the protection role played by algae and hence strengthen the researchers conclusion
D) It is a definition of reproductive success only and does not contribute to weakening the researchers reasoning
E) it is a long-term consequence and does not give any detail on the immediate research and thus does not weaken researcher's reasoning.

Aim - to check how Algae affect the egg laying behaviour of fish.
Data observed - section without algae had significantly fewer eggs than the section with algae.
Derived conclusion- Algae facilitate fish reproduction by providing attachmment and protection benefit for eggs.

Logic - Observed data about one specific behaviour is used to conclude a broader conclusion (Typical Gmat).
Pre thinking - At the same time we cannot deny that the algae does'nt facilitate, we should look for an option that provide an alternate cause of less eggs in the region withh no algae.

In simple terms,
Data - Alage ----> more eggs and no Algae ------> less eggs
Therefore, Algae caused More eggs
What if, there is some other reason that caused less eggs, in that case the conclusion will not follow and we'll find our valid weakener.

A actually goes against the findings. If fish prefer bare surfaces, we would expect more eggs in the scraped sections, not fewer. Eliminate
