B is the answer. This is because B shows that it is not about the algae but about the fish finding a suitable attachment site. This means if the corals were without abrasions, the fish would have found them suitable.

B is the correct answer choice as per me.

Option A: This is not consistent with the research's findings. If higher number of fish preferred bare reef surfaces, then not finding more eggs on bare surfaces is absurd. Even if we assume it is true, more number of eggs planted yet lesser eggs being found means that the reef surface is not suitable as more eggs perish there. Eliminate.

Option B: This is correct. This actually explains a possible reason for why bare reef surfaces in this experiment could have had some reason for not being suitable sites for egg laying, which is external to the fish actually not choosing them or the bare reef surface not being inherently suitable. The researchers conclusion lies on this assumption that they are comparing naturally occuring bare surfaces to algae sites. However, if this option is true, that would mean that the comparison does not hold. Hence, we can choose this.

Option C: This makes a case for algae covered surfaces, thereby strengthening the argument instead of undermining. Eliminate.

Option D: The proportion of eggs that hatch will only come into question after the eggs are actually laid on either of the surfaces. Our stem talks about finding intact eggs, thus, looking for sites that are actually suitable for laying eggs. We can eliminate this.

researchers want to test that notion. so they selected 20 coral reefs. out of 20, they removed algae from 10 and kept algae in other 10.
for the next few weeks they monitored the egg laying across all these 20 sections.
they found that reefs with no algae had fewer fish eggs than other 10 undisturbed reefs.

conclusion= algae facilitates fish reproduction by providing site attachment and protection.

there is big monumental jump from reasoning to conclusion. just because there were fewer eggs on disturbed reefs they made conclusion that these sites dont promotes fish reproduction process.

A then why were they so hesitant in doing so.? had they done it, we wouldnt have this que at hand. out.

Lets understand the argument..

Researchers want to test whether algae helps in the laying of fish eggs and their survival.. The selected 20 sections of coral reef where algae formation is there and scrapped algae from half of them.

Conclusion: they found fewer intact eggs at site where algae were removed and hence concluded that algae helps

We have to undermine this that algae do not help or there is some other reason for this phenomena.
A- This is direct contradiction instead of alternative explanation of finding. We can't contradict fact. we can only contradict assumed reason for the fact finding.. rule out
B- This seems to give alternate explanation. substrate is damaged due to action of craping that is actually reducing sites suitability as an egg laying and surviving location not algae directly
C- This is supporting the explanation of the stated fact that algae helps. we are here to find alternative explanation so that we can undermine-- rule out

weaken question

Argument says - less eggs on scraped (algae removed) and more eggs on Algae section (this is fact, we cannot prove the study wrong), so Algae facilitates fish reproduction\ or algae protects fish eggs (we need to prove this wrong)


A - Tries to prove the fact as wrong, which is not required in our case, so eliminate
B - gives additional reason for Algae removed area to be unsuitable for Algae, while not proving the fact wrong, it tries to undermine that without this arrangement fish might not have any preference, so keep

As per the question stem,

It is given that out of 20 reef sections, 10 sections are intact and 10 sections are scraped off of the algae.
Final outcome of the experiment is : The sections from which algae had been removed had significantly fewer intact fish eggs than the disturbed sections, leading the researcher....

We need to find some reason or aspects which creates reasonable doubt that mere absence of algae has not contributed to the damage to the eggs.

A. This is against the passage.
B. Scrapping removed algae but what if it also removed the surface texture or structure that facilitates egg laying rather than algae.
C. This does not covers the contrast. Somehow makes the study stronger.
D. Hatch rate is not the Point of discussion.
E. Gives a condition beyond the scope of experiment in hand.

A. The fish in the argument laid more eggs on the algae surface. This doesn't weaken the argument in any way.
B. Yes, this gives me an alternative reason as to why there were more eggs in the algae region than the other region.
C. This is more of a strengthener rather than a weakner. If say algae provides more protection then there is a chance that there will be more eggs on it.
D. What is an accurate indicator is out of scope. The conclusion is about causation. i.e Algae facilitates reproduction.
E. Eventual outgrowth of algae is irrelevant.
