Describe your personal and professional goals and the role an MBA from the University of Chicago GSB plays in your plans to reach these goals. (1,500 word maximum) Our general guidelines for the standard career goals essay apply to this document, but the above-average length and the nature of Chicago’s other questions add another strategic consideration. While the second and third essays certainly provide ample opportunity to share information about oneself, there really isn’t much room for narrative. This is a distinct contrast from schools like Stanford and MIT, which ask applicants to recount the details of their actions in several specific kinds of situations across the application essays. With this in mind, Chicago applicants might want to use a portion of their 1500 words in this essay to briefly share the details of some professional achievements and significant experiences. Essay 2: If you could step into someone else’s shoes for a day, who would it be and why? (500 word maximum) The most common trap that applicants fall into when answering this question is writing more about the person whose shoes he or she would choose to occupy than about the reasons for this selection and the way it fits into his or her candidacy. While this can be a fun question with an answer that is sure to be telling, it’s important not to lose sight of what should be the main objective of one’s application: sharing impressive information about oneself that is relevant to one’s business school candidacy. Selecting a prominent figure whose work is in line with one’s professional goals or favorite hobby can be a great strategy for producing an interesting essay that allows for detail about the applicant’s background as well. Essay 3: We have asked for a great deal of information throughout this application. In this portion of the application, we invite you tell us about yourself using a non-traditional application format–a PowerPoint presentation. In four slides or less, please provide readers with content that captures who you are. This approach isn’t exactly revolutionary - Stern’s usual Essay 3 asks for a personal expression that gives candidates complete freedom with content and medium (except for the exclusion of edible/perishable personal expressions) - but it does speak to Chicago’s interest in a candidate’s interests and personality. While all this “white space” might be daunting to some, an easy way to approach this process is to ask oneself a few simple questions. Are there four personal themes to which you would like to devote a slide each? Would you prefer to use the four frames to create a sense of progression through a day, event or activity? We’re hesitant to provide too much guidance given the free-form nature of the task; the best advice we can offer is to think about who you are (and how this might be of interest to the GSB adcom), consider how you could translate this into words and images, and then try it out. lol....while i agree that you have to test a person thoroughly; if a person comes out of it feeling like they got drilled, i'm not sure if that's the way to do it
i think that an interviewer should be able to evaluate the person without making them feel like crap

hey guys,

just came bk from my interview. i thought it was decent. nothing hard. the standard questions.

1. Walk me through your resume
2. Why MBA? Why now?
3. Why Chicago?
4. Talk about a leadership experience at some job.

Some follow-up questions. But fairly straightforward. No feedback. I asked her at the end to talk a little bit about her experience at GSB.

Overall, nothing crazy.

Just came after spending the day at GSB. Met rhyme and yapped about various things until my interview. Interview was very different from my expectations. I definitely felt like I was being put through the wringer. After probing me about various points, my interviewer came up with a question way off from the left field.

"NC, Here's a marker. There's the board. I want you to use those and teach me something in the next 2 minutes" I have a background in education consulting, which may have prompted the question. Anyways, I think I nailed that question. We'll see what GSB has to say about that.

Everything else was pretty standard, but I was probed and countered in almost every single question. Many others I met during the day had similar interview experiences. So, if you are interviewing on campus, expect a grilling. Good luck to everyone else interviewing at GSB!

Nupur, sorry we missed each other. I was at the GSB atrium until late afternoon and enjoyed a personal tour of the facilities by rhyme, who by the way is even more COOLER in person.

ncprasad - we must have had the same interviewer as that describes my interview to the t- including the teach me something question. Everyone I spoke to afterwards had the probing questions as well - but I was expecting them after reading the interview feedback here and elsewhere.

Hi All,

Even I got done with my interview today. Personally I think I got stumped on a few questions....
The most interesting part was that I did not get many of the standard questions, that caught me off guard.

All in all I definitely think it could've been better. Came back thinking like many people do...why didn't I say this...that etc etc.

The campus was swarming with people all dressed up. Kinda gives one the feeling of what's in store.
My interview started around 10 minutes ahead of time and lasted exactly 30 minutes. The interviewer (a recent alum) was a Senior Financial Analyst with a local firm and needless to say seems to be doing really well.

Here are the Q's,

1) Introduction followed by laying out of the proposed interview format. (20 minutes+10 minutes)
2) Walk me through your resume starting with getting into undergrad till you clicked submit for the app
3) What course from your undergrad changed the way you think. Told me to select a course which wasn't related to my profession
4) Give me one word to describe your under grad university. This was followed by some more questions about class size etc
5) Give me details on some interest you've pursued outside of work that changed the way you think
6) Give me the book you admire most and why ( I got stumped here since I don't read much)
7) Give me a list of websites that you read regularly
8) Give me an instance where you put in a lot of effort and things did not work out
9) What would you do at the GSB
10) Give me a course that you definitely want to take and why. I said INTOPIA. He then probed into whether I have spoken to students about it. My source was website research. He noted that down...
11) If there is one company you say would most be like the GSB, which one would it be and why.
12) How are you different from the others here
He then asked me if I had any questions.

The "change the way you think" theme didn't help and I surely wasn't prepared for it.
Well, I guess there is no point whining now...the long wait begins albeit with a not so good feeling. It's been a good run thus far...I can only hope that it continues.

NC, mNEO, Rhyme, I was planning to call/meet you folks but ended up losing steam after the interview

Was great to meet Nupur, by chance, today.

Not the best comparison, I had a phone interview with Ross and found it more convenient than live interview with a Kellogg alum. You can keep all your notes in front of you and go on to cover the list of items you want to tell about during an interview.

im really surprised by the tough interviews being doled out... the r1 ones generally sounded pretty relaxed

dabots, when I interviewed yesterday, there must have been atleast 100 R2 candidates. This to me implies that GSB is interviewing WAY WAY more number of people in R2 than in R1. Because the number of interviewees is higher, the interview could be used as a filter so that final discussions center around a manageable number of applicants. That's just my theory of course.
