What were your post-MBA goals? Back to your current field? If that's the case, maybe that's a potential reason (since you're an older candidate) for the dings. Maybe they're not convinced you need an MBA...

Post-MBA plan was to transition to IT-strategy consulting (from IT-delivery).

Good evening, everybody!

I've been following the thread with a great interest since I have to choose between LBS and INSEAD right now. I would very much appreciate if you could help me out with this. The situation is as follows:

I have been accepted by LBS for MBA'11 beginning this August (received the confirmation a couple of days ago) and is waiting for the INSEAD's decision for the Jan 2010 Intake (has been already interviewed, R2).

1) The question of the day - what is better LBS or INSEAD for the general management/ consulting? (Most likely, I will be back to Russia after graduation).

2) What are the chances that after being interviewed you will not be admitted, the probability rate?

The reason for my question is that if I choose to wait until the INSEAD's decision I will be late for LBS (have to pay the deposit by 23 July). BTW, do you know if INSEAD normally answers in the last day of the consideration term (i.e. 4th September in my case) or earlier?

Looking forward to your replies

Rupkar, CONGRATULATIONS! I would say "a bird in hand is better than two in the bushes". LBS is rated number one according to FT. If I were you I would go for LBS. No reason to risk it.

many congrats rupker. Without an iota of bias, I can say that you can't really go wrong with LBS. INSEAD and LBS are both outstanding in terms of reputation and placements. One thing that you might want to consider is the program length (LBS 2years vs INSEAD 1year). Many admits who I've spoken to are coming to LBS (instead of other 1year programs) to maximise study time during the downturn.

Thank you for your replies!

However, I am still uncertain about LBS. Frankly speaking, if I knew for sure that INSEAD accepted me I would choose it over LBS since it is more focused on general management/consulting than LBS.

Rupkar,

INSEAD is more focused on strategy and general management, LBS has more focus on finance, also since London is/was the finance hub of Europe. If you want to go into consulting ASAP then you should choose a school like INSEAD or IMD.

Regarding your problem you should ask INSEAD for an early decision and inform Adcom of your dilemma with LBS. The holiday season started today in France (14th of July) and probably all the staff will be on holiday for the whole month of August (I am used to it from HEC). You are accepted at one of the best b-school on this planet so you can easily ask INSEAD for a decision. LBS's waitlist is long and they will surely not wait for you...

Cheers,

rupkar

Could be a nationality quota thing. Many German applicants/admits may have better international exposure. ...

Just out of curiosity, what does the German student population look like @ INSEAD? (You'll never guess why I'm asking... )

I've heard ze Jermans are not zet common, preferring ze PhD for ze Jerman Industrie, Ja?

I guess I could count the number of Germans in the class of Dec '09 and in the R1 admits for Dec '10 and prove you wrong... too much work though 8-)

But I have to say there's lots of German guys and girls at INSEAD. Some of them have dual (or triple?) nationalities. More or less all of them have significant exposure living or working in an international environment. Just like the French students, German students at INSEAD do not conform to the national stereotypes.

Thanks for good advice, catgmat! I think (and hope) this might work.

woww! what a pleasant situation to be in :).

It would be helpful if you can let the clubbers know briefly about your profile. I have an intuition that you are an Indian Male (by your id), if so I would be more eager to know abt your profile! :)

I will be applying to both INSEAD and LBS and am looking into consulting as well, but if I were you, I would chose LBS simply because of it's global brand.

Hello past applicants,

How much leeway does INSEAD allow in terms of "number of words" allowed for an essay. Is it specified anywhere or should we be strictly below word limit.

Thank you!

Well, frankly speaking, the situation is not that pleasant now as I had rejected the LBS' offer before I got the reply from INSEAD, which was that I had been wait-listed :( Not a catastrophe yet but still nothing pleasant :(

As for my profile, I am Russian, legal consulting, 26 yo, 5 years of experience.

Whether it is strict or just a recommendation is specified for each essay right in the application form.
