As far as I heard, both IMD and INSEAD put a lot of weight on applicant's international exposure. This could be the reason for such decisions, especially since IT-consulting does not seem too rare a field and so some person with similar job profile could be accepted, if he/she did not have this relative weakness. The adcom might forgive somebody who's in his early twenties, but I'm afraid that for more experienced folks this demand becomes more strict. Lack of EC is less problematic, IMHO.
So, what are you planning to do next? Which schools will you be targeting? (of course, your LBS wl could still end favourably... wish you luck there!)

Could be a nationality quota thing. Many German applicants/admits may have better international exposure. Or it could be a background thing, like greenoak mentioned IT consulting is not rare and maybe you are also competing with the other candidates with similar work experience. I agree that lack of ECs is no big deal for us older applicants. I might be wrong on this one, but if you have enough compelling stories, from work or outside, it doesn't matter much whether you can play the trombone or sing in a band.
Disclaimer: everything above is pure speculation, take it for what it's worth.

Thanks greenoak and Nerdboy for your analysis and pov. I agree that the international exposure might have been the issue.
Regarding next steps: I do not put a lot of hope into the LBS WL - at least not for this year. But of course, I - as probably every LBS WLer - hopes for a personal repetition of bsd_lovers story of last year. Apart from this I have not yet made up my mind about plan B. Options are:
A. bsd_lover's story repeated (cannot be influenced): I am still not sure if sending an update email is the best thing to do here. As I was WL in R3, I currently tend to stick to the advice the AdCom gave in the email and just wait for an update from LBS side
B. Reapply for next season: As my work load is really high, I probably have to limit myself to ~3 schools again. Candidates: Oxford, Cambridge, HEC, IE
C. Put MBA plans on-hold: Concentrate on Sen. Mgr. Promotion (Sep 2011/12 - age 34/35) and then with the promotion apply to an EMBA.
