Brilliant post, I have already read the following books and it has definitely improved my reading comprehension.
Guns Germs and Steel
The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal by Desmond Morris
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand

I want another suggestion. A book that is dense, probably compares to the 700+ level of Reading comprehension on the GMAT.

Can you help me with that?? bb
Something non-fiction.
I was thinking a book on philosophy such as "A history of western political thought".
You think it will help?? Cause I found the content a little difficult to comprehend.
And maybe after finishing the book I can get a hang of difficult passages.

In the last 4 months I finished these books:

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Guns Germs and Steel
To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee

I think that all those 3 have helped me to consistently improved my reading comp skills. Now that I am going to retake in about a month, I would like to read a engaging novel similar to Memoirs of a Geisha.

Do you have any suggestion? (I tried to read Ulysses by James Joyce but I got confused in so many parts that I got bored)

*UPDATE: I started The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. From the beginning I found the the personality of the character Howard Roark pretty startling.

Great recommendations, thank you. I would try to read at least 50 pages a day. Not sure which one to start with though. Let me go through the easier ones first

The key is to like the book. A good book will suck you in and not let you put it down until you finish it. Obviously you need to get into it and go through the introduction and character development beginning but hopefully you’ll be captivated 😎

I totally agree with " a good book will suck you in and not let you put it down until you finish it." Hoping to find at least a few such books from the recommendations. I would try to read the prologue or summary of these books and then decide which one I would like to dive in first. I would also consider your breeze, less breeze tips while deciding on which one to read first

The Sound and the Fury- William Faulkner.
The catcher in the rye - J. D. Salinger
Catch 22 - Joseph Heller

All these 3 are amazing books that are beautifully written, and you will find a bunch of modifiers and some complicate gramatical structures that will help you getting use to difficult GMAT sentences. By the way, the hardest (from a plot perspective) is the Sound and the Fury, so I would suggest that you pick first any of the other 2.

Dear All,

I would like to submit the book that, so far, i have enjoyed the most:
Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail by Ray Dalio.

Hello bb

Thanks for your insightful recommendations on the fiction books. I've begun with some and noticed my reading speed is improving. However, we all know that GMAT passages are different and a tough nut to crack (I'm fairly good with science or history-related passages, but can't say the same about other topics)

I attempted reading The Economist but found it quite challenging to understand the terminology, and as you mentioned, I found my focus wandering away soon after beginning to read an article.

Should I continue focusing on fiction books, or would incorporating The Economist (and similar magazines) benefit my GMAT verbal preparation more? Your advice would be incredibly valuable.

I devote 1 hour outside of learning the GMAT content daily to improve my reading abilities.

Thanks,
Aryan

Personally, I would not bother with the economist magazine. While the articles are indeed good, it’s choppy and you will be moving from article to article and probably get an hour or a couple hours of reading time with the book you’ll get hours and days and it will suck you in so you will not be able to put it down. I can put down in the economist magazine 😇

Also the price you pay for the economist, it gets expensive
