Applied in round 2 and waitlisted w/o interview. I sent a letter requesting feedback and am presently working on my WL strategy. Any tips, especially from SOM students/alum like Nink, would be very much appreciated.

Congrats to all the admits. I hope more than anything to see you in the fall!

@Current Students and alums of Yale SOM
Can you give an example of any creative/fun class that you have?
Also, what kind of social events do you have at Yale SOM?

What do you consider creative or fun?

To name a few....

First Yr International Experience lead by professors with incredible contacts in specific region = eye opening experience. It's not simply an international trip like Random Walk or KWEST. You will get much more out of it.

You get to run Food for Thought (It's a convenience store at YSOM, entirely run and managed by YSOM students and proceeds go to the Internship Fund, which supports students committed to summer opportunities in non profit, etc)

Hedge Fund Course - It simulates a real hedge fund environment and its operation. At the end of the semester, you get to make your pitches to hedge fund traders, managers, advisors, etc

Unique Core Curriculum - Each course approaches managerial problems from the viewpoint of a key internal or external organizational role, rather than a single academic discipline. SOM students learn that solutions require a broad view of the issues and an ability to synthesize competing points of view to come up with the most effective ways to lead organizations.

Yale SOM Student Faculty Challenge - fun contest between faculty and students, inspired by CNBC's Fast Money MBA Challenge program

Investor Trading Game - an annual event that has students competing against the market (and each other) in a mock exchange that builds on and reinforces the lessons of the Investor Perspective course

I mentioned it before...be aware of "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out). Simply, there's just so many things going on around the campus - something interesting for just about everyone. Happy hours, volunteering opportunities, short trips, parties, club organized events, networking events, Fundraising Week (where you dress up based on theme), conferences (lead by industry leaders and other big names), sports clubs, Net Impact, alumni events, Social Enterprise Club (You get to make real impact by getting involved in various activities all over the world), Food and wine Club, Women in Management, etc etc.

You guys should exchange information via PM (if you haven't done already) and meetup. It will make you more comfortable when you know someone at the event. It also makes it that much more fun until school. You guys can coordinate stuff together for admitted student wknd, other YSOM events, orientation etc etc.

Any of the admits heard about scholarship offers? We should have heard about it with our admit decision, right? (which means I'm paying for it the old fashioned way)

For All New Students:

I thought every one knew about these videos and etc on the YSOM website but I guess they can be hard to find.

I keep getting PMs from various people about orientation and what to expect once the school starts, etc.

I can write back to PMs but I think these resources do much better job ~

I believe that scholarship offers would have been given with the admissions decision (I didn't receive one, so can't say with 100% certainty).

I understand your apprehension - now that the initial euphoria of the admit has subdued, I've turned my thoughts to the question of how I'm going to pay for this thing. Rates on Grad PLUS loans are 7.9% with a pretty hefty origination fee. Based on some quick math, if you borrow the full cost of tuition (call it $100k) and commit to repay in 5 years, you're looking at a monthly payment in the range of $2,000. Yikes.

No wonder so many b-school students compete for the highest paying jobs. I'm currently in investment banking, and was planning to move into a lower-paying field after b-school - my fear is that the weight of my student debt will seriously constrain my freedom to change career paths.

Current students: can you comment on the availability of TA positions? I'd imagine that these are reserved for the highest performers, but are they an otherwise viable option and do they pay well?

Yep, that's how most people hear about their scholarship.

In regards to the TA positions, I am not too familiar with the process. (sorry) I know that they are available to YSOM MBA students but you might also have to compete with Yale SOM Phd students. I think someone once told me at the happy hour that she got it because she took a course with a professor and that gave her an edge. As teaching assistant, you get to do research (either independently or working with others) for a project, etc. If you are interested in those opportunities, ask about them at Admitted Student Wknd (or even at Yale Club tonight).

I think if you are going to work for a non-profit or the public sector, Yale has the "Loan Forgiveness" program. Yale SOM will basically pick up your tab on the period you work in non-profit. That could be an option, right?

nink, is the Loan Forgiveness program automatically acquired if you work for non-profit or is it only available to a select group of students? also forgot to ask the adcom how it is for internationals.. :-/

It's my understanding that international students qualify and there's salary limitation (with phaseout above certain lvl). You also need to get documentation from your non profit employer (and I think you continue have to provide documentation while you benefit from the program). It only covers need based loans.

I'm curious about this, too. Looking back through the R2 admits, not a single person mentioned getting financial aid. That makes me wonder whether they will be releasing those decisions later on or whether they just don't give out a ton of scholarships.

I got one of the early admit calls for R2, so I received my admissions packet last Friday. Included was a copy of the admit letter from the SOM website, a handwritten note from Bruce D, and some SOM promotional materials. There wasn't any mention of financial aid either way.

A few folks on the Darden forum mentioned that their admissions packets explicitly mentioned "no scholarship" if none was awarded, but I wasn't sure whether that was common or not among B-Schools.

Should I still be holding out hope that financial aid from SOM could be on the way?

In addition to TAing undergrad courses, it's also possible to TA the core first year SOM courses (Macro, Micro, Accounting, etc. etc.) as a second year student, provided you achieve a grade of "Distinction" (reserved for the top 10% of each class).

Yes, adcom confirmed to me that international students qualify. The salary limit per year is equal to the average salary of the graduating class. If your salary is below this, your entire loan commitment for the year is taken care of. If your salary is above this, a part of your loan repayment is given by Yale. You would need to apply every year for the loan forgiveness program and you can avail it for a maximum of 10 years.
