For those with interviews, I read that "what's your favorite book" is a recurring question.

What are they looking for in that question? Ie, what information about the candidate do they hope to extract from it?

No clue but my guess is to see if you're cultured, well-read and to understand your interests.

that question, and its variants,
1. what book are you reading now?
2. recommend a book or movie to me?

(favorite of Dee herself, if you get her, and it happens)
is something of a throw away, which usually occurs late in the interview, after they have a sense of who you are, etc. It can be asked to confirm their sense of what you are about, or, as with many HBS questions, to provide a follow up: and here is where you get in trouble (esp. w. Dee, who is WIDELY read, by both habit and all that travel she does). Eg.
Q. what is favorite book?
A. (yikes, aint read anything in years, er, er, ) Freakanomics
Q. (brother, everyone says that! or Blink) Really, do you agree with their rationale about why drug dealers are not rich?
A (good-bye cruel world.....................................)
SOOOOOOO, dont worry so much about what book, just worry about being able to discuss it in some basic way.
IF Q. is "what is most influential book you have ever read?" well, that is one it does help to prepare for.
If you work for Facebook, you can expect some Q about the movie, just have something smart and short to say. Altho no tragedy if you have not seen it, they may ask why or tell me about book or movie you have seen in last year..............it would be odd not to have an answer to that.

good book to talk about in your HBS interview, altho ok to say you have not read it,but read about it.
It would be a good way to segue into your own upbringing.

Sandy - is getting questions about life outside of work and school a good sign or it doesn't mean anything (i.e., literature, movies, hobbies, etc.)?

This probably goes without saying:Do NOT use this in your interview. You don't want another applicant to say the exact same thing. You can use the concept though and find another book.

My interviewer asked me my favorite tv shows, last fiction novel I read (and what I thought - "a little too pseudointellectual for my tastes"), what I do when I have a bad day at the office (I.e., how do I relieve stress)

Call me crazy, but for this one I think you are best answering with... YOUR favorite book. One can assume that if you've received an interview you are probably aware of "buzz" books, so I think they are actually looking for a glimpse into who YOU really are. Referencing a book you've never read is not a good idea...these are smart people you are talking to who know when they are being pandered to... and an attempt to steer the conversation will most likely fail.

very true .. the worst thing is that they read the same book.. it is just that they want to test if you will tell them the truth and how well are you at expressing your thoughts

somebody on the HBS chat posted an invite at 11.13 AM today. I will stick around for 30 more minutes. I think its game, set and match and we are on the losing side.

Here is my contribution to the forum.

I called the admissions office 5 minutes ago (2/15) and was told that they are still sending interview invites today and tomorrow...although she did not have a specific number to give out.

can anybody at least give us a glimpse of how the invite looks like?

Subject Line: Interview Invitation

Dear XXXX,

Warm greetings from Harvard Business School!

After careful consideration of your application materials, we are delighted to inform you that you have been selected for an interview with a member of our MBA Admissions Board. We look forward to the opportunity to get to know you better through our interview process.

We use an online scheduling system to manage our interview process. Since we know that many of our interviewees expect to travel to either our campus in Boston or one of our global hub cities for their interview, we are sending this message in advance so that you are aware of where our Admissions Board members will be traveling. We hope this advance notice is helpful to you as you plan for your interview.

We will have interview slots available in the following locations:

Boston, MA (on the HBS campus)
Menlo Park, CA
New York, NY
Dubai, UAE
London, UK
Mumbai, India
Paris, France
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Shanghai, China

You will receive another email from HBS MBA Admissions at noon on Monday, February 7 with a link to our online scheduling system. You will be able to select a specific interview slot at that time. Please note that all of our interview slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In the past, our interview slots have filled very quickly, so we encourage you to be prompt in selecting your slot.

Videoconference interviews (via Skype) may be available for applicants in remote locations.

Again, we hope this advance notice is helpful to you. Thank you for your interest in Harvard Business School, and we look forward to meeting you soon.

Sincerely yours,
