For those with interviews, I read that "what's your favorite book" is a recurring question.
What are they looking for in that question? Ie, what information about the candidate do they hope to extract from it?
No clue but my guess is to see if you're cultured, well-read and to understand your interests.
that question, and its variants,
1. what book are you reading now?
2. recommend a book or movie to me?
(favorite of Dee herself, if you get her, and it happens)
is something of a throw away, which usually occurs late in the interview, after they have a sense of who you are, etc. It can be asked to confirm their sense of what you are about, or, as with many HBS questions, to provide a follow up: and here is where you get in trouble (esp. w. Dee, who is WIDELY read, by both habit and all that travel she does). Eg.
Q. what is favorite book?
A. (yikes, aint read anything in years, er, er, ) Freakanomics
Q. (brother, everyone says that! or Blink) Really, do you agree with their rationale about why drug dealers are not rich?
A (good-bye cruel world.....................................)
SOOOOOOO, dont worry so much about what book, just worry about being able to discuss it in some basic way.
IF Q. is "what is most influential book you have ever read?" well, that is one it does help to prepare for.
If you work for Facebook, you can expect some Q about the movie, just have something smart and short to say. Altho no tragedy if you have not seen it, they may ask why or tell me about book or movie you have seen in last year..............it would be odd not to have an answer to that.
