Emarc182: Actually, Indian applicants are pretty over-represented. This isn't an attempt to tout diversity. It's quite the opposite, in fact.

Not to be rude, but I'm tired of the continuous commenting on minority status. I have seen the phase "I am an Indian applicant" 100 times on here. Is that, honestly, one of the top 5 things about yourself that you feel needs to be mentioned in what SHOULD be an inherently merit-based process? I don't lean on the fact that I'm gay, or left-handed, or have a coarse hair texture, so why does everyone feel the need to offer their ethnicity up as a component of their qualifications? I appreciate the fact that schools like diversity (as well it should), but I would feel a bit awkward touting my background like that in an obvious, transparent attempt to pull on the 'diversity string'. Maybe that's just me.

Actually, I am pretty sure anyone who's mentioning the fact that they are Indian or Asian isn't scoring any diversity points. I'd say Indian/Asian males are probably the most overrepresented group in the applicant pool by a large margin.

Then why, pray tell, does everyone feel the need to mention this fact. I don't think its relevant to the discussion, is what I'm saying.

Because it's not a point of bragging or touting about diversity. It's to get a gauge of who's getting (or not getting) invites for a particular type of group that the applicants themselves feel they are being judged against. It's probably not this simple but it's sorta like someone in middle-market PE wondering if other middle-market PE folks are getting interviews.

I disagree with the notion that they select "X" number of Indian applicants (and therefore judge Indians as a group). I do agree, however, that they select people who differentiate themselves in some way. Uniqueness (the ability to demonstrate it, not simply saying you are) is what they value. I don't think that ethnicity is a relevant comparative point, save only for the argument that there are some other relevant qualities - e.g. IT - that might happen to be found across the Indian applicant pool. Overall, I am simply saying that comments about people's ethnicity don't have any place on this discussion board.

Sounds like you're taking excerpts from admissions office materials :-D

Look - plenty of people like to claim they are unique, but the fact of the matter is, very few people are unique enough to be interesting in what is essentially a self-selecting group of highly qualified applicants. I'm simply agreeing with what they are saying.

@Emarc182: I was the one who mentioned that I am an Indian applicant and that was not because I was playing an ethinicity card, but it was an attempt to clarify that the invites are out for mumbai hub (and to put across the point that the invites might be trickling out on a hub basis) and that the applicants in california should not get worried. Hope you understand.

All the Best!

pembahopeful: Do you realize you repeated exactly what I said? I bring this up not because I'm being accusatory. I'm just amused, we had a women's center talk at lunch today where we brought up the fact that men tend to do that, while women almost never do. I wonder why that is.

I note you got an invite, congrats! Hope it goes well. :)

Emarc, it's fairly relevant. Caucasian/Asian/Indian males face more competition in general. So high scores for this group don't necessarily translate to getting an interview.

I actually think that your hunch is an insightful one. Thanks for shedding some light onto the process, along with your own $0.02. Good luck!

Do we have any hard facts about CA slots? I'd love to see numbers if any of the folks with interview emails would be willing to share.

Is there anybody else out there that is just a high-performing person who grew up in the suburbs in a middle class family that doesn't have either (A) a tragic story to tell or (B) a super wealthy, well-connected family to get them into HBS or (C) a minority status to point to - incessantly?

I don't think HBS cares for life profiles like that...

Yes, me. I grew up in the suburbs, middle class family. White male. No tragic story (pretty good life actually). Not sure if I'm "high-performing" - does anyone consider themselves that? Kind of subjective. My slow-pitch softball team was high-performing this year. I mentioned that on the application actually.

Got my invite today. I work for a relatively small theme park. Terrible undergraduate transcripts (multiple failures and withdrawals); first year at a community college, the rest at a small, unknown state school. Took me 7 years to get through school. Finally graduated this summer. I had a good last year though. No great excuse, just mentioned that work has been my priority (the truth!).

That being said, I think I put together a decent application. I didn't have anyone read my essays though. Or talk to an admissions consultant (although I do plan on contacting Sandy for the interview, can't hurt!). I did well on the GMAT, but we all know that's not enough for HBS. I can honestly say I'm very surprised I got an invite today. I don't mean it is as form of bragging, but just pointing out that HBS is interested in "real" people, too. Not -only- rock stars. Pretty sure I'm not one.... yet.

You have given me hope. Thank you for sharing.

uprightcitizen: Congrats! You seem to be the uniqueness to which I refer. Glad to see they still value that to some degree. Theme Park work sounds much more fun than making powerpoint slides :)

Sounds like someone I'd want around for the case method. Well done!
