i started it from a reference point from my deployment, then i connected everything - i tried to focus on a theme, for me my theme was "helping people" it was really basic but i tried to show a pattern of making decisions to help people - join the army - project i did in iraq - consulting / mentoring junior officer -> then tied all that to my short and long term goals as a consultant and then strategic manager

i think its important for the whole essay to flow from a central idea, i think a reference point is a good way to make it more interesting, rather than say:
"I decided to pursue a career as a management consultant"

you could say something like "I had just landed in Japan to lead a team on a very important project to resolve major operational challenges. It was my first time in a lead role and the work I did fueled my passion to develop skills in management, strategy, and operations.."

i dont know something like that maybe, just my 2 cents..

Yeah, I just saw the rankings. I deleted my Stern app and started a SMU app instead. Kidding. I think these rankings make about as much sense as the BCS.

I had a question with regards to the Stern Application. In the Academic and Professional Information section, Stern asks for the GPA. As an international student, do I need to convert my overall score into GPA or do I leave as is?

One idea I rejected was making a jigsaw puzzle of some sort that they'd have to put together w/ images of my life with 1 piece missing and then have a note (within the puzzle) that said "the missing piece of me is NYU Stern!" or something cheezy like that.

I decided not to do it simply because it would be a pain for both me to put together and for the Stern adcoms to assemble, and lets face it, its pretty cheezy.

I just sent in a cool photo of Yosemite backcountry I took with an accompanying short essay about why I like backpacking. I think they are just trying to get beyond the 'professional' you, and find out about your personality. My 2 cents.

i agree, i tried to make a good presentation that showed the different parts of me

i structured it with a picture of me from iraq with arrows point to my head, heart, and feet...

one foot was on the ground -- i labeled this where i've been
one was in the air to take the next step -- i labeled this where i'm going

then i had four slides after that, the one for my heart i put pictures of me and my wife, who also happens to be my high school sweetheart from when we were kids and now, i put up a picture from 9-11, and a picture of my family

for my head - i put pictures from meetings i did in iraq to set up a local government, to brief my guys, and to build a new water plant in a dangerous town

for where i've been - i had a ranger school quote, pictures of me in combat situations etc

for where i'm going - i put nyc as the background and some other stuff

also i submitted this morning, so here we go...

now on to round 2 applications, ill be happy in april when i know where i'll be!
