close but no cigar. it's a commonly used term for schools that are as competitive as ivies but happen to not be so old as to have been in the actual Ivy League. examples include Stanford, MIT, NYU, and other "top" schools.
WHOA! It was simply a corny quip, I almost deleted it when I wrote it because I thought it was so dumb. I think everybody knows what "near-ivy" is. I guess we now also know it's a term for impressed with yourself or ultra-defensive?
