Two rectangular table tops have equal area. If the first table top is 6 feet by 18 feet and the second able top is 9 feet wide, what is the length of second table top?

(A) 7.5
(B) 9
(C) 11.75
(D) 12
(E) 24

We can create the equation, letting n = the length of the second table top:

6 x 18 = 9 x n

6 x 2 = n

12 = n

Answer: D

(A) 7.5
(B) 9
(C) 11.75
(D) 12
(E) 24

Official Explanation

Since these areas are each length times width and are equal, the question is telling us that

6*18 = ?*9

Dividing both sides by 9, we have an equation equivalent to:

6*2 = 12

Therefore, the missing dimension is 12.

The correct answer is (D).
