Option A

Find x+y
x= 500+y
Y=y

Then,
 500+y= 3(y-100)

Solving 1 and 2
We get x= 1000
Y =400

x+y =1400

Lets translate:
Tank X holds 600 gallons more than tank Y.
Let tank Y hold Y gallons
So, X = 600 + Y

Given, If 100 gallons of fuel were to be pumped from each tank, tank X would then contain 3 times as much fuel as tank Y.
Translating,
X - 100 = 3(Y - 100)
=> 600 + Y - 100 = 3Y - 300
=> 2Y = 800
=> Y = What is the total number of gallons of fuel in the two full tanks

therexore X = 600 + Y => 600 + 400 => 1000

Asked, What is the total number of gallons of fuel in the two full tanks i.e. X + Y
=> 1000 + 400 => 1400

The answer is C

X1= 600 +Y1 (given)---------------1
X2= 600+(Y1 -100) (after 100 g removal)-------------2
Y2= Y1-100 (after 100 g removal)----------------3
X2= 3*Y2----------------4

equating eq2 and eq3
=>600+(Y1-100)=3*Y2.... (from eq3 Y1-100 is Y2)
=>600+Y2=3*Y2
=>Y2=300

Therefore, X2=900 (from eq4)
Y1= 400 (from eq3)
X1=1000 (from eq1)

X1+Y1= 1400 (Answer)
